Monroe Co Update
Just a minor correction to the MPSCS page news item...
The tower already exists at Toledo Fire station #18 on Lewis Ave (not Old US23) in West Toledo.

From the Michigan Highways Web site, courtesy of Chris Bessert:
1959 - Early in 1958, the initial 8 miles of freeway connecting US-223 at Sylvania, Ohio with M-50 & US-23 at Dundee are completed between M-50 and Summerfield Rd. By the end of the year, the entire 18-mile freeway from Sylvania northerly to Dundee is open to traffic and signed as part of US-23. The former route of US-23 along Lewis Ave from the Ohio state line to M-50 is turned back to local control, while the concurrent stretch along M-50 westerly into Dundee retains the M-50 designation.
Lewis Avenue WAS US-23 from 1926-1959. Therefore, it is "Old US-23."

If it's been nearly 50 years since a road was last designated, I think that would be "prehistoric 23" ;> Nobody around Toledo uses that phrase.
The only "old" designation I know is Old 27 headed up north.

Well there is "Old US-12" in the Chelsea, along with "Old US-23" in the Brighton area. Come to think of it, there is an an "Old US-112" in Branch County as well. I guess us Michiganders are more passionate about our numbered highways then those in Ohio!

Monroe is still trying to find a VHF frequency to use for paging that Canada will not fight. The recent Frequency that was submitted was one Monroe Couny is already licesened for but Canada fought the "new use" so it is back to the drawing board!

Old 16-mile or new ;> ? Not sure what either of those posts have to do with Toledo or Monroe Co but sometimes the obvious things pass me by...
While we're here - MPSCS is now listed as serving multiple states. Anyone know why the change was made? I don't think having a tower in Toledo, which simulcasts only Monroe County traffic, would make it an Ohio system?

Monroe County
Monroe County officials, along with the MPSCS, in cooperation with Lucas County’s E-9-1-1 Committee, have agreed to let the state of Michigan erect a new site in Lucas County, Ohio that will greatly improve portable radio coverage across the southern part of the county.
Currently, there are some rather significant coverage issues in south central Monroe County, especially with handheld radios. The new MPSCS site, which will be part of the already established Monroe County simulcast system, should correct these issues once it goes online late next spring. Moreover, the new site represents a cooperative agreement reached between Monroe and Lucas Counties.
As part of this agreement, all of the radios will share common/mutual aid talkgroups that will help enhance interoperability not only between the two counties, but also in the future with Michigan and Ohio.
The all ready existent radio tower where the new MPSCS site is being constructed, is at Toledo Fire Station #18, located on Lewis Avenue (Old US-23) in Toledo’s West End. The tower is currently part of Toledo's 800 MHz analog TRS. However, a new multi-site, Project 25 TRS that will cover all of Lucas County is presently in the works.
The new system will use CQPSK simulcast technology, where all of the radio transmissions are rebroadcast off all the towers at the same time, on the same channel pair. Moreover, the new system will be on the cutting-edge of public safety communications that will include updated MDCs, which will eventually include interfacing with national databases that will allow law enforcement personnel retrieve suspect photos and fingerprints in a matter of seconds. Likewise, it will have a patch to 460.400 MHz, a Toledo Metro area mutual aid channel, which will allow nearby agencies to communicate with users on the new P-25 TRS when active.
For Monroe County, the new site will mean the elimination of dead spots for portable radios on crucial highway and rail arteries, which could hamper response efforts in times of an emergency or disaster. However, more important is the long-term ramifications of building a communications system that will greatly enhance interoperability, not only throughout all of Lucas County, but the sharing of resources across the border with Michigan, making this the best solution for the entire Toledo Metro area.

I see the bold, but any Monroe Co units going into Toledo would not be hitting a MPSCS tower, and Toledo units north of the border would not be hitting a Toledo tower, so it doesn't make sense to call MPSCS multi-state (nor would it seem to be right to call Toledo's new system a Michigan system either.)
As for the weather - forecasts posted here probably wouldn't fit the topic very well. Check the website.

Sounds like a road trip to Toledo will be in order this spring.
