I'm in Ishpeming in the U.P. and I just heard TG 1034. It was a plane talking to the ground and getting some weather updates. The conversation was very similar to ones I hear in the summer between the DNR and aircraft when out looking for fires. Following is the RR description of TG 1034:

1034 40a D H-EVENT25 District 8 Statewide Event

District 8 is a reference to the State Police. Anyone know what H-EVENT refers to?

H is the bank on the Motorola rigs. EVENT means it is a multi-agency channel set up for various groups to talk at the same time. Statewide means it can be used anywhere. District 8 means absolutely nothing, there was originally a plan to use certain event channels in specific areas and that's somewhat true but not always the case.

TG 1034 was just back on the air. I heard "Air 16 to Event 34". This was going through the tower at the Negaunee State Police Post, and the response sounded like one of the dispatchers from the Post who has been on duty this morning. Anyhow.........the pilot said, "I'm leaving Sawyer and heading for the survey area". So at least I know he was at the local airport and heading out, but that's about all I know.

I heard that too. I'm on the Keweenaw. The Air 16 should be the regional airplane for the DNR and sounds like they're doing a wildlife survey. Maybe wolf , moose or whatever. Most DNR Districts have an Airplane and the call sign will be their district number preceded by Air such as Air-3 for dist. 3. Do you hear other DNR traffic??? I"ve not heard much over here.

Hoofy,

I've heard VERY little from the DNR lately. All summer and fall they were busy with forest fires. Then, during hunting season, they were on the air constantly. Since the holidays, I hear very little DNR traffic.

Where in the Keweenaw are you? Eagle Harbor is where I spent my summers as a kid and I still try to get up there every summer.

I'm using a RS 2096 in the central part of the U.P. I can pick up several nearby towers all the time, and several others part of the time. Just moving the radio around the house, or adjusting the antenna makes a big difference.

I know that my best bet for more "stable" reception is to put up an outside antenna. Naturally, I don't want to go to a lot of expense, nor get into anything elaborate. Does anyone have any suggestions, based on something that they are already using?

Thanks in advance

Thumbs up

Kirk...

I use just a radio shack 9 foot stainless steel antena on the peak of the house. The "Expurt's" will tell ya it won't work but it will, trust me it works on all bands. It'll cost ya $30 including the 50 foot of coax...I used 1 1/2 " lag screws and a mirror mount to atatch the antenna and mount to the peak...I'm moving it to the tower soon...Guaranteed not to blow down like a bigger antenna would.

I just found this on the Radio Shack site. Is this the one you are referring to?

102" Stainless Steel Whip Element for CB Antenna

I'm listening primarily to MPSCS. Is that antenna going to work well in the 866-868 mgz range?

Thanks for the info and reply. I just might try it; the price is certainly reasonable. I doubt that I'll do anything about it until spring though. I don't feel like climbing on the roof just now. Of course Spring is only a few weeks from now.......yeah, right.

Recently I've been hearing units identified by alpha codes in the western Upper Peninsula. For example, I just heard Gogebic County replying to " Baker13 ".

Anyone know what department iBaker is, and/or any others that might be used recently?

Thanks

TG 7009 is Michigan State Police Narcotics and is used Statewide. I hear it in the Ishpeming area. It is almost always encrypted and I usually end up locking it out.

I heard Gogebic County talking to a "Baker" unit tonight and later I heard Houghton County talking to an "Adam" unit.

Most of the Adam units are the county Sheriff's Dept. The Baker units are a department within the county as are Charles, David, Edward, Frank, George and so on. Go the Database here on RR and go to Houghton County for an example.

6041 is a DNR fire TG. Keep listening. All the DNR fire talkgroups will start to get *very* active around this time of year.

Guys, could you please post some freqs besides the state 800 Mhz system that are active up there? I was in Houghton twice during the past summer and there was no police activity anywhere except on 800 Mhz. Did Michigan Tech security go 800 too? How about National Park Service HQ to Isle Royale; are they still working VHF? Fire and EMS would be great too. Thanks!

All Houghton County Fire Depts. 155.94, 155.76, 154.085
All Keweenaw County fire Depts 154.31
Tech security is on 800mhz
All ambulance and first responders in both counties on 800mhz
Not sure on National Park Service
For unit numbering go to RR data page Houghton County near bottom of page "public safety numbering"
