Yagi beams and DFD system.
I am learning a lot about yagi beams on the antenna forum. I wanted to know if anyone is having luck listening in on deroit with a yagi beam. I live in Allen Park, and cannot recieve Western Wayne, Livonia or Ann Arbor very well at all from my house. Will a yagi beam pointed in the direction of these cities towers help any? Has anyone tried? How much further away can you get from a system and still hear them with a yagi pointed than using a regular mobile antenna? I am about 25-30 miles from Western Wayne, 30-35 from Livonia, and about 45 from Ann Arbor.

yes, both myself and my counterpart rodger are using them. They work great. Especially if mounted on a rotor.
You must be a WFD medic? I work comms/ apparatus repair in A2 and other dept.s in and around the downriver area.

Will they allow me to hear Lovonia, Western Wayne, And Ann Arbor better? What do you mean rotor? So I can easily turn it to the tower I need? I don't work Downriver. I work in Oakland County as a Firefighter Paramedic.

A yagi should assist your reception, just make sure you use good cable with it to further decrease losses.
I live in Wyandotte and have no trouble receiving Washtenaw County using a small panel antenna I got off of eBay (supposed to be for 900Mhz). Signal is still somewhat weak, but it does come in full quieting, so there's no problem at all...
As far as Western Wayne County goes, shoot, I can RX that thing down in my basement without any trouble. It's my opinion that these scanners must be really poor receivers at 800Mhz.

From my house in Allen Park, using my RS 800mhz antenna or even my multiband mobile antenna Western Wayne is very choppy at best every now and again. Are you hearing it no problem with a yagi antenna? What type are you using? I would love to hear washtenaw and even livingston for that matter from my house. Please let me know.

No, I use an 800Mhz half-wave, the portable antenna that came with my radio, and Western Wayne County can come in from my home, in the basement.
The antenna I use for Washtenaw County is a panel antenna made for 900Mhz, from eBay- and there are several similar ones for 2.4Ghz, I'm unsure what they're made for, but they work good for 800Mhz. I got mine a couple years ago. It's a white box with an 'n' connector protruding from the bottom, about 1 1/2 inches thick, 8 inches tall and 12 inches wide.

Can you tell me how much these antennas cost? Where did you get them. I caught the one from ebay, but what about the others? What type of scanner do you have?

For Washtenaw County, Spectra 800 with the directional coupled to about 10' of RG8m
For digital stuff, the XTS3000 with the 1/2 wave antenna that comes standard, but I have an 800Mhz quarter wave and dipole as well. They all seem to work equally well.
