NORAD excercise Thurs 26th Detroit
A chance for MilAir monitoring tomorrow:
http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...=2006601250376
Detroit Free Press:
"Listen closely at twilight Thursday and you could hear F16 fighter jets, H65 helicopters and multiple Cessna aircraft flying low above downtown Detroit in a Super Bowl defense exercise.
Also skyborne will be a CH146 Griffin helicopter, CF18 fighters out of Quebec (this is a binational exercise), a C21 Learjet, an E3 Airborne Early Warning and Control System and, last but not least, air-refueling tankers."

I have the MI ANG and AWAC freqs (including HF) as well as callsigns on my wiki page below. I don't know how useful the AWAC freqs are going to be because I'm sure a lot will be encripted. Good luck!

Chief: Great info! I have all of the AWACS, NORAD and Selfridge frequency and coast guard loaded up......we will see what happens...
However I am a little confused....
Canada says that this excercise will happen in the very early hours of Thursday, the Info above states that it will happen at Twilight....and the definition of twilight is when the sun goes down over the horizion....so when is this thing actually going to happen??

This morning channel 7 reported that the exercise will be at dawn. When my dad was on his way home from work (around 6am) he said over Mack Ave that there was a chopper shining a small Cessna, so they did get an early start.

I did not hear anything last night, and I was up till after 1:30am.
My antenna is only a 100' of speaker wire and it sits about 10" above the roof line. I think it is time for a new antenna. Plus my 780 keeps stoping on various frequencies and just making static noise, maybe interference from somewhere?
hmmm...

I know Huntress is the callsign for NORAD and Chevy is the callsign for the F-16s from SANGB.

Was 261.1, 344.33, and 293.6 being used for combat air patrol or was it being used by the Civil Air Patrol? Because I don't recognize those three freqs.

All aircraft started on 260.9 All others were given out later.
261.1 - Convo between Huntrees and Wizard
344.3 - Wizard giving vectors to targets for the Chevy's and Helo's
293.6 - Was referred to as the Boom "Chevy 25 Come up on the boom 293.6"
Also heard the CG C-21 on 228.9 referred as Zoom Control.

Thanks Mark, I left work late last night in Southfield, around 12:50 AM Thursday morning, and saw what looked like 2 helos flying in formation, but it could have been a cessna followed by a helo, not sure, they were crossing the area of 8 mile and the Lodge heading downtown.

With the Super Bowl right around the corner, anyone know of any unusual traffic that will be going in and out of Selfridge?

Thanks for the welcome! As I stated in another thread, I live off of 21 Mile, about a half mile east of Romeo Plank. I monitor Selfridge quite a bit. It will be a lot quieter when the F-16s leave for good and the A-10s make Selfridge their home! I sure do miss the F-4s!!
So "Chevy" is the call-sign of the F-16s when flying a C.A.P.? I've been wondering why they use that call-sign every so often. Now I know! I was told by a tanker pilot at one of the air shows at Selfridge that they use the call-sign "Auto" when going out of state and "Piston" while flying around Michigan.

Another Exercise Wednesday
Anybody have more info?
January 27, 2006
NORAD to repeat test of Super Bowl security
By PAM ZUBECK THE GAZETTE
Everyone’s ready for Super Bowl XL.
The Pittsburgh Steelers. the Seattle Seahawks.
But not the North American Aerospace Defense Command.
NORAD, a bi-national command based at Peterson Air Force Base, will repeat a wideranging exercise that was held early Thursday to ensure airspace-security preparedness for Detroit’s 65,000-seat Ford Field on Feb. 5.
NORAD spokesman Canadian Forces Maj. Darren Steele refused to disclose weaknesses revealed by the first exercise or scenarios upon which the practice was based. He said the rerun, set for next Wednesday, was triggered by “weather issues” that prevented a comprehensive exercise the first time.
“They didn’t get to run through as much as they wanted to, so they thought it’s worth our time and we want to run through it again,” Steele said. “When we do exercises like this, if the weather interferes, we’ll continue until the objectives are met.”
Detroit had its typical winter weather of clouds and some snow earlier on Wednesday, but the skies cleared Thursday. The exercise took place between midnight and 5 a.m. Detroit time Thursday.
Although NORAD trains regularly, Thursday’s five-hour drill was far from routine. The “fairly big-scale” practice involved myriad agencies from both countries because Ford Field is near the Canadian border.
The agencies included the FBI, Federal Aviation Administration, Continental Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard, NAV Canada and Canadian Air Defense Sector.
Close monitoring of civilian events is a byproduct of the Sept. 11 attacks, which also prompted the launch of Operation Noble Eagle, in which NORAD fighters patrol the skies. Since then, NORAD fighters have responded to more than 2,000 air events in the United States and Canada and have flown more than 40,000 sorties.
Hundreds of personnel took part Thursday, from controllers to pilots of fighter jets from both countries, an E-3 Airborne Early Warning and Control System aircraft, several civilian aircraft and air refueling tankers.
Wednesday’s drill will be on the same scale. Steele said he didn’t know the cost of the exercise, which took months to plan. He said large-scale drills involving assets from both countries are conducted at least once a year.

Norad
NORAD Practices Plan to Protect Super Bowl Fri Jan 27, 12:31 AM ET
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The North American Aerospace Defense Command on Thursday practiced its plan to protect Detroit's Ford Field from an air attack on Super Bowl Sunday, a concern spawned by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The exercise run by the joint Canadian and American command, which defends North American from missile and air attacks, was hampered by "weather issues" and will be redone next week, Canadian Forces Maj. Darren Steele said.
Hundreds of people, including controllers, fighter pilots, an E-3 Airborne Early Warning and Control System aircraft, several civilian aircraft and air refueling tankers took part in the exercise. Wednesday's exercise will be of the same scale.
"They didn't get to run through as much as they wanted to, so they thought it's worth our time and we want to run through it again," Steele said. "When we do exercises like this, if the weather interferes, we'll continue until the objectives are met."
Steele did not say what weaknesses were revealed or what scenarios were practiced during the five-hour exercise.
Since the Sept. 11 attacks, NORAD jets have patrolled the skies through Operation Noble Eagle. Fighters have responded to more than 2,000 air events in the United States and Canada and have flown more than 40,000 sorties.
The Super Bowl will be played Feb. 5.
