Default 800 mhz system down.

I just heard a page on the vhf fire freqs for the Houghton Co area that the 800 trunked system is down except for the i-call function. 08:50 AM

No it was only Houghton County.

The 800mhz trunked system in Houghton County is back up and running as of 11:34AM.

No indication why it was down.

Apparently, it was for a software upgrade to the towers, and replacement of the routers.

It's funny they didn't give a heads up on it prior to the shutdown. They were scrambling around trying to get everybody notified after the fact.

Why didn't the county tell everyone when MPSCS informed them the system would be going down for upgrades?

Just another "side effect' of 700/800/900 computer driven systems... This type of "maintenance" is dangerous if no back up plan is in effect at the time of shutdown and places Public Safety personnel in jeopardy during 'outages' where they just might be involved in a deadly force situation at the same time. We have discussed this before, but once again, the TRUE nature of the 800 system was shown in great detail... TOO much 'technology', where it is just NOT needed.

Have a chat with any Trooper in Michigan and ask their personal, off-the-record opinion of the "marvelous" new system and see what THEY have to say about it. I have done so in Dickinson and Memnominee Counties on several occasions since November 2005 and most of the time, my answer is not in words, but just in eyes pointed to the ground and a negatave head movement indicating frustration and distrust of the system in an emergency. Nationwide, lives are being lost due to 800 trash systems and I truly hope that the MANUFACTURERS will be named in the wrongful death cases... perhaps THEN, they will stop putting lives at risk by selling this stuff to unsuspecting and gullable County and State Administrators.

rdale,

I have no idea..

Houghton County relies on central dispatch in Negaunee, which is run by the MSP. So they should have known if they had gotten the word.

The way it sounded the dispatchers were caught unawares and the word maintenance was never used. They just said that the system had gone down. Later on I heard it refered to as being taken down but no other explanation given over the radio that I heard.

Negaunee paged all Fire and Rescue agencies on vhf and I heard the county on their old vhf system informing their cars on the road but all notices were given after it went down.

I hope someone is still really sore today from getting chewed out for lack of communications over it.... (no pun intended)

The county residents decided they wanted a lot cheaper dispatching service so we voted to go with Negaunee and save several hundred thousand dollars a year. They closed it 2 or 3 years ago I think. It was a good move I believe.

Your Sheriff needs to update his website.

I passed along your observation to the Sheriff's website. Remember this is the U.P. and some, or maybe most things are done in slow motion. We still have some snowbanks that are 10 feet high.

Hopefully it will be gone by August because on really bad years we start getting snow in September.
Our first winter here was 81-82 with 360 inches recorded and on June15 there was still a pile of snow 4 feet high at one of the snow dump sites. Summer was on Thursday that year.

We can sometimes work 440 mhz back scatter off the black fly swarms.

That's why the bugs are so vicious up here. They don't have much time to bulk up.

I was up in Ironwood one year to give some training on Thanksgiving week. I came into the airport with 13 inches of snow on the ground overnight and the locals told me that's just fluries and by lunch time there was no snow on the roads or sidewalks - they had cleared it. Much better than they can do down here.
Was that summer on thursday also winter on friday? I'm also into Irish History especially the ones who went from the coal mines of Pa to Houghton ,the AOH ,and Woody Guthrie's song about 1916

Is it possible that maybe they used this planned outage as a drill for if it were to really happen and didnt tell any one on purpose to see how things would go. Just speculation on my part.

Did anyone else in the U.P. hear any announcement prior to the system shutdown??

I suppose it could have been a drill. I hadn't thought of that but they don't usually put the general public at risk like that.

The following day the Troops had a car at 110mph on the radar and that chase lasted several miles before they broke it off as too dangerous. The Troops were on the radio constantly because the guy was running on back roads and constantly changing roads. The guy stopped a few miles later to get gas and bragged about out running the cops.
