They do not issue the permits anymore.

Yes it is wise to carry a print out of the new law with you or a copy of your permit if you still have it.

The question about Michigan's revised scanner law was posed to a local retired judge. Especially the part about using one during the commission of a crime. More specifically, what would happen if you were stopped for speeding while using a scanner.

He indicated that speeding and other similar moving violations are not considered to be a crime. However, driving without insurance, etc. is a crime. I suppose the law could be interpreted differently by other judges.

Perhaps the best thing to do if you are stopped it turn the darn thing off. Out-of-sight (or hearing), out-of-mind as they say.

You're just used to there being a law against having a scanner radio in your car, and you're looking for something to say it is OK. The new law reads that it is normally not against the law, and only points out the conditions in which it would be against the law.

Compare it to anything else that is not against the law...you don't need to carry anything that says that. Remember, in the U.S., you are assumed innocent until proven guilty. We don't want to create a situation where we have to carry a card saying we're innocent, right?

So you no longer need a permit to have a radio scanner in your car?

No but make sure you print out and carry the statue with you at all times just in case. Most cops either don't get the updates or they don't read them.
