A while back there was some discussion about this technology being tested. I was just sent this link that you might find interesting.

Of course assuming the bad guys have plates on their cars and their not fictitious or the plates stolen themselves.

California at one time had a van equipped with a similar system used for traffic violations such as speeding. They'd park along side the roadway and when the radar would trip from a speeder it would capture the front and rear of the vehicle as it passed the van, scan and recognize the plate and submit the info back where a citation would be generated and sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. I'm not sure if they still use this process but there were videos of it before available online.

They're using that system here in Michigan already!

They started using the system in Binghamton, NY in August 2006.

They did several news stories about the number of arrests (as I recall it was 6) on the first day it was in operation.

DC and PG Co, MD have been using it for the better part of the year also. In DC it is used by both PD and PW. PD is obvious, and PW uses it to identify cars that they are looking to boot and/or tow (multiple outstanding violations).

Wink

Was that stick figure REALLY the logo for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games?

I hope they didn't spend too many C$ designing it.

That was interesting. Thanks for the info.

From what he said in the video, it will only read British Columbia plates. So it looks to be (for the time being) only able to read the plates in the state or province it's bought in.
And with the way Michigan has 4 or 5 different flavors of plates, it may be impractical to implement as seen in the video.

I understand that there is a lot of pressure from the MSP and Michigan Sheriff's Association, to have matching front and rear license plates in our state again. Conversely, many automobile owners view having a front plate on a classic car as a PITA, as it will decrease the value of their investment. However, I feel that it makes a car easier to identify when approaching from the opposite direction.

The last year we had matching plates was 1982, which were the very ugly 1979 black with white legend design. Many people lamented the passing of our beautiful Bicentennial plates, when the new 1979 came out, calling them "Austin's Uglies," after James H. Austin who was the Secretary of State back then. From then on, we really suffered from a very limited "one" choice plate design in Michigan for many years to come.

I think we need 2 plates. We are one of the very and I mean very few states that don't have front and rear plates.

Its easier for identification for Police and other people.
