Default Federal Trunked?

I have discovered a new trunked frequency in my area (Sault Ste. Marie): 167.815

It is definitely a Motorola trunked freq. because I am seeing a wide range of Motorola TGID's pop-up on my Pro-96 when I have it in manual mode and in Mot. trunk mode. I have "scanned" it but get no voice. I guess my question is 2 part: A) Anyone know who this could be? B) Anyone know how I can get a hold of the voice channels?

Most of the Feds are on a VHF P25 Trunked system.

Up in your area its most likely Border Patrol or Customs.

Could it be from Canada?

I checked into the Canada option and didn't find anything listed nationwide, let alone Ontario.

Well, I hear USBP on the MPSCS system, so I am not so sure that it would be them. I have been looking for the Customs Freqs. to no avail and that is why I was searching this morning.

Any idea what the voice channels would be, as this is a control channel?

Are you hearing a 9600 baud, Project 25 data channel? If so, can you can you get your scanner to display the Sys ID and WACN? I'll bet it's part of the National IWN TRS that is currently under development.

Thank you!

I'm getting it decently strong by the court house. It goes off for a few seconds- every 20 seconds or so, then resumes its normal control channel sounds.

I just checked and it is slightly out of range but I am still registering MOT TGIDs:

6288
1840
65072

Just to name a few...

Ontario is HUGE on Provoice and EDACS Standard. Their feds are usualy on analog VHF non trunked, VHF lowband, and EDACS provoice

Try 167.8125 or 167.8250 and see if that brings the system in a little clearer?

I was listening for about 2 hours after I posted last and didn't pick up anything, not even carrier. I tried entering it as trunked first, and saw I had no signal, then I tried listening to it conventionally and didn't hear squat. Squelch was down as far as it will go.

I'll try to try again Friday. I have to go up on some roofs to check out some antennas. Maybe the elevation will help. I'll try the other freqs too.

Awesome. I will do a little more research tomorrow as well.

As I am sure you very well know, this town is a little crazy when it comes to signal reception! I hear things up at the college that I do not hear around here, and vice versa!

Bigblue: I tried it in EDACS and it didn't read, only in Motorola.

So I am still hearing it on this Freq.

I will try to describe the sounds:
It sounds like the MPSCS control channel except about ever 1 or 2 seconds it has a 2 tone beep- very quick, that interrupts the "Diesel engine" sounds. The first beep sounds higher pitched than the second. Then it goes right back to the engine sound.

I tried Pro96com, but didn't get any luck. It might have been the location I had the scanner in my house though.

I checked for the signal again. I was on the roofs of Crawford hall and CAS doing some other radio testing. The top of CAS has a good line of sight to the corner of town with the jail, PD, courthouse and the Annex. I’ve been able to key our repeater (on CAS) with a portable sitting on my belt, while sitting in the car in the PD carports. So I know a fairly low power signal can easilly travel between those two points.

I still didn’t hear anything. I also tried the other freqs. Have you heard it anywhere else in town?

Maybe I am going crazy. I will try and see where else in town I can hear it from.

Should I be able to hear them with the control channel only, or do I need to seek out the other freqs. that as of now are unlisted for Sault Ste. Marie?

Sounds like the site in Sault Ste. Marie is low-powered. You might want to scan around and see if you can find any other channels that might associated with the system. However, if you can use "control channel" mode on your scanner, please do so.

I will keep searching for other associated channels. In the meantime I will put it in as the control frequency in my Pro-96 and see if I can hear anything.

On a side note: anyone know why when I put 167.8125 it goes automatically to 167.815?

I Noticed that too with a few MEDCOM channels as well. Also I found this interesting, the FCC does not see the freq as being registered. Active or even pending.
