Lansing Comm. College DPS
I know LCC DPS at the main campus switched to the new Ingham Co. Trunked system, but what is west campus using. Since they are in Eaton Co, are they using the trunked system as well, using their old frequency (453.500) or simulcasting the old frequency to the trunked system?

The last time I was there for training they were simulcasting the old in with the EDACS trunked system but in their cars they had both systems.

When I was there yesterday at SKYWARN Training, I programmed in "west campus" frequency, and heard nothing but CW identifier. I also saw the uniformed officer carrying a M/A com radio , but that doesnt necessarily mean they are ON the trunked system (at least west campus), and since the radios are UHF they could still be using the old freq's.

also, I know that LCC DPS is now digitally encrypted except for the event talkgroup.

All the cars and officers have M/A-com radios. Main Campus officers are on the EDACS system and those talkgroups are ProVoice only. West Campus officers use 453.500, which is linked with the Main Campus 460.250 repeater and monitored by dispatch. They'd like everyone to be on EDACS, but because of the construction/special windows at West Campus they can't get a reliable signal. There was talk of putting in an amplifier or something to that effect, but I don't think the money for it has been found yet.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but whats the point of encrypting a digital EDACS transmission when the only people that can hear them are others with properly programmed, digital capable EDACS radios?

Because you can get a ProVoice radio on EBay and at the least set it up in conventional mode, and with some work can get it to trunktrack. So if you truely want protected comms (NO idea why LCC needs any protection in the first place) you encrypt too...
