Question What am I (digitally) missing?

All,

I live in Michigan obviously and don't currently scan the statewide digital system, thus I don't know what is on it...

Could someone tell me what I'm missing? Trying to decide if I should upgrade to a digital scanner?

Thanks,

John

Talking

If you go to the database and click on michigan, then click on MPSCS (michigan public safety communications) then scroll down to your county you will see all of the municipalities that utilize this system near you.

That said, in my county (Livingston) I would not hear anything besides a fire department "tone out" on VHF frequencies had I not bought a Pro-96 digital scanner. All of te local PD and FD are now on the MPSCS.

In a gist...for statewide...DNR and MSP....

Real Time x-pressway Traffic reports from the perspective of State Troopers, and reports of snowmobile operators being pulled over and ticketed as well as fishermen being naughty from the DNR.

Then there are the local public safety systems gone digital....primarily the same things you'd hear on analog systems, but in digital.

Digital does sound physically different. I thought it would be similar if not exact to digital cellphone technology as far as sound goes, but it's not. Most often it sounds muffeled and abrupt - as if there was a strong noise blanking filter in full tilt being used. Takes time getting use to. I've had the pro-96 (since it came out...just sold it), and now have the 396/996's by Uniden. And between the two makes there is no difference in this sound (and I'm not referring to loudness, or in the ability of decoding that signal). Lastly, I find the 396/996 offers more options in manipulating that digital signal than the Pro-96....but this info probably belongs on another thread.

No way to answer if you should or should not without knowing what county/city you live in. Then could give you a better idea.

I live in Nashville Mi, and Nashville, Hastings, and Barry County are all on the P25 system, so I have no choice. If you said you live in G.R., I would at this point say stay with maybe a Pro 97 instead of going with a Digital scanner.

I live in GR and I have my Pro96 scanning digital all the time. It is very active with a lot of traffic all the time. MSP is very active handling accidents. Motor Carrier gets interesting too.

Thanks yeah I live down in Lenawee county, and I think for now I can get away with a conventional scanner (non-digital I mean!), but only if I don't mind not listening to the statewide system...

So we'll see...

Thanks to all!
