Happy Birthday Msp (the Big 90)
THIS WAS ACTUALLY YESTERDAY BUT I WAS BUSY AND COULDN'T POST IT.
Please remember our members, family and friends - past, present and future who serve to protect and help us. This includes our police, firefighters, medics, etc....and those supporting them behind the scenes.
Today marks the 90th Anniversary of the founding of the Michigan State Police.
-------------------------------------------------------
Ninety years ago today, Gov. Albert Sleeper created the Michigan State Troops Permanent Force (also known as the Michigan State Constabulary). With Col. Roy C. Vandercook as the first commanding officer, this new force consisted of five Troops of mounted, dismounted, and motorized units totaling 300 men.
Since that day, both the State of Michigan and law enforcement in Michigan have experienced many changes. That’s why it has been said you can draw lessons from the past, but you can’t live in it. The reality is times have changed, and they will continue to change. There’s no doubt these are some of the toughest financial times in the department’s history, but we can’t let this ruin our spirit. As Theodore Roosevelt said, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
The pride and commitment that began in 1917 is still alive today. It is evident in our PROUD tradition of SERVICE through EXCELLENCE, INTEGRITY, and COURTESY that you help carry out each and every day while serving the citizens of Michigan. As both your Director and as one grateful citizen, I would like to thank you for your unwavering hard work, commitment, and dedication.
On this milestone I ask you to take a moment to remember those who have gone before us and especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while ensuring public safety in Michigan
