What happened to all the funds the Casino's were going to pump into Detroit's Public Safety system so they could buy new equipment, and more equipment?

Thats pretty bad! Like the article said, rigs frequently break down (because of the conditions they are subjected to), but are usually replaced and fixed promptly- at least in most departments. I think we will see this more and more as the budget gets worse.

When you can't pump, or can't raise an aerial- and it is still in service, you've got some serious problems! It is only a matter of time before a firefighter gets hurt, let alone the public! Another reason why I didn't/won't apply in Detroit.

FOX2News ran a few stories showing numerous firefighting apparatus, EMS/ALS, and Police cars sitting in fenced in parking lots, waiting for repairs. Problem is, they all had mechanic's liens on them due to no payment from the City of Detroit. I guess they thought someone would fix them for free!

It's bad enough firefighters have to risk their lives fighting the fire, now their equipment works against their survival as well. It's not just a result of a bad economy, but gross mismanagement of funds, and needless, frivolous spending of tax payer's dollars. Detroit needs to get their priorities straight!

Not only Detroit, but all the higher-ups in the state need to get their priorities straight.

Wish I could stay in Michigan for a job, but it isn't looking like that is going to happen.

The politics can be a very frustrating part of the job at times! "Hurry-up-and-wait" is a bit frustrating at times too!

Engine 26, the first due engine company to the Mayor's residence was placed out of service due to budget cuts about 2 years ago. Ladder 14 quartered with Engine 26 is still in service.

I was considering it "breaking news", based on the following:

On Monday, six engines -- or pumpers -- were unable to respond to fires. Two ladder trucks were out, and five ladders were limping along on runs with defects such as a broken aerial ladder or inability to deliver water.

The situation was even worse Friday, when one additional ladder truck was malfunctioning. The department started that day with four companies of firefighters without a rig to use.

I guess it's just "broken" news.
