HELP! in Livingston Cty Brighton/Howell
Hello all, glad I was able to join your site. I have some questions, and Thank you in advance for any of your answers
I have never owned a scanner. I want to buy one. The only things I want to listen to are:
MSP (Brighton Post)
Livingston County Sheriff
Howell City PD
Brighton City PD
Brighton FD's
Howell FD's
Livingston County Ambulance
I have been researching scanners, what type do I need? I guess I don't need one with 1000 channels. Do I need digital? Are there any good ones that are not $500? Thank you so much.

You need digital, any of the current scanners Pro-xx96 and BCD-x96 will work for you. Scan the threads on comparing Uniden vs Radio Shack to help out picking which way to go.

All of Livingston County is on the MPSCS TRS. A Uniden 396T or 996T will work really nicely for you, as it can not only receive the agencies you want to, but also has the 700 MHz band, which will be implemented throughout the state in the future. This way your radio won't become obsolete overnight, and won't have to run to the store to buy a new scanner right away.

Michigan is going to the 700mhz band?? I had not heard this.....I know other states are using it, but I thought Michigan was going to stay on 800 even after rebanding...Where did I miss this?

Down the road if the time comes 1) when they need more frequencies and 2) when they have the money 3) they have the option of adding 700. Wouldn't rush out and sell your Pro96 quite yet ;>

Thanks for your replies
Are there any scanners that would suit my need that are not overloaded with features that I probably won't need? As in, I only want to listen to those select channels. Those Unidens and Pro's seem like very good scanners but also seem like system overload for what I need.
Thanks again,
Mark

I don't beleive that there is just a scanner that does 800mhz trunked that you want to listen to. Your choice of radio shack pro-96 hand held or pro-2096 mobile/base and the 996t mobile/base and uniden hand held which I can't think of the model number for that one right now are bought it for now. I live in Brighton area myself and if your a local I can meet up with you sometime at a local radio shack and go over some stuff with you that I like about them. I have never used a uniden scanner before so I can say it better or worse. To me from what I heard both do a great job. I have a pro-96 hand held right now that I use in mobile and in the house monitering brighton, pd, fd, ems, pretty much what ever you listed you wanted to listen. Let me know if you local im guessing you are casue what you want to listen to and I could meet with you sometime and let you listen to the system and show you some features.

Correct and the first areas of the state to go to 700 will be the ones along the Canadian Border. Canada gave them an out and told them they would approve any and all frequencies in the 700 to 803 band w/o their approval.

Thanks again for all your answers. I also appreciate Kc8zd for the offer to meet. I do live in Howell and that would be great if we could hook up someday at a local RS so you can go over some ins and outs of the scanners. Thanks again for all the help!

Yeah no problem Mark. Any more questions just let me know and if you have more time next time we can meet again sometime before you buy one and can show you a little programming with the win96 software and how it works and explain little more on the digital stuff.
Just let me know. Have a good one.

HELP! in Livingston Cty Brighton/Howell
WAIT A MINUTE! Did I hear (read) somebody say "they will change when the state 2. GETS MORE MONEY"?
with the economy the way it is, it doesnt seem like we have to worry about them switching anytime soon.
