Default Warren PD Encryption

Tonight I was looking at the online city council agenda for Warren. The council will vote on Tuesday to approve funding for radio encryption with an additional grant from the manufacture. The past election is changing many positions within the city. Has anyone heard of this proposal before, and who might be behind it.

This has been my primary scanning interest for the last 30+ years.

Doug

I thought they used DES on their old 800mhz analog sys, but that was just for surveillance. So they want to full-time encrypt now? I'll look into it.

Here's the text of the item:

"Request of the Police Department to approve the purchase of Radio Encryption Upgrade, with 2 years Dispatch Service and 2 years Technical Support upon registration of grant funds from Motorola, in the amount of $135,937.00."

I live in Warren and enjoy listening to the scanner and all the various police and fire channels, even the Special Ops. I wonder what they will encript, if not the entire Police system.

Anything that anyone can find out about this would be much appreciated.

Only applies to SWAT and undercover operations. I have a very good source.

At that price it's got to be for a few units

The purchase was approved unanimously by council with no questions being asked. Surveillance sounds to be less than a half dozen units, and after listining to them for so many years, I understand their terminology when active. I can do without them, but, I couldn't imagine not being able to listen to my own citys dispatch.
