Question Freqs Around New Jersey

I have never really monitored any Mil Air but I'm thinking I want to maybe give it a try. I'm specifically looking for aircraft freqs. Blue Angles, F-16, any around Fort Dix McGwire, Lakehaurst.

Any freqs would help.

The scanner I use primarily is a pro 2055. Can I get most of the Mil Air freqs?? I don't think I can get the 300 MHz correct me if i'm wrong.

I'm also curious about what the Coast Guard helo's use when they are out on search and rescue or just talking to boaters in the area. I know 21A but what else for the "behind the scenes."

Thanks!

You should have no trouble with the non-digital stuff (there are some 380 Mhz trunks coming online nationwide, and you will not be able to get them with the 2055); however your first priority is the antenna. Get a ScanTenna or discone and feed it with good coax; get it up nice and high. This is one game where the little stick antenna is almost worthless unless you are near an air route or close to a base.

Now to some sources

Our wiki has a lot of information - unfortunately it's rapidly becoming dated, as BRAC is moving things around. Still there's enough here to get you started. Go up to WIKI in the blue toolbar and click on 'Military Monitoring'. Read through the following links;

Blue Angels 2008 (note however that a much more comprehensive listing is published in MT every year (the March 09 issue has the latest list), and hopefully soon they will have the PDF version of the article posted). Of course they're not around all the time - you need to know when they will be around to make use of these...

Naval Air Warfare Center Lakehurst

McGuire AFB

PA ANG 111st Fighter Wing

PA ANG 193rd Special Operations Wing

R-5802A/B/Kiowa MOA/Bollen Range

NorthEast AAR Tracks

United States Coast Guard

Of course you might hear Pa. flights transitioning from the various ranges, or on their way out. It really is a catch as catch can game. Hence some of the Pa. listings.

To continue - you're sorta in between the ZDC and ZNY ARTCCs - so here are both of them; stick with the UHF freqs and you should avoid most of the commercial stuff, although you might hear the controllers announcing various flights (they have to, to keep airspace clear...). Both of these links come from our database...always ignore the FAA ATA100 listings, they're constantly out of date...

New York (ZNY) Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

Washington (ZDC) Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

And a website, and Yahoo group...

NEPA Air Comms

pamilitarymonitors : PA Military Monitors

and finally, watch the Sticky Thread for Milair IV in the Maryland forum. Frankly I think it should be moved here, since that thread has many non-Marylander participants.

It's antenna time! 73 Mike

There's one little catch, frequencies and their usage seems to be in a state of flux. I've also noted that some former AM channels have gone to FM P25 encrypted. Right, it's pretty much catch as catch can with a bit of Catch 22 thrown in for good measure.

I'm sure you are talking about the 380 mhz migration Warren. It's happening nationwide, and you are right, some of these trunks are encrypted. Nothing will hear those, not even the new Uniden or GRE scanners 73 Mike
