MAGIC most likely are F-16Cs from the 186th FS/120th FW of the MT ANG out of Great Falls IAP, Montana. BIGFOOT should be a range control for one of the Ogden Air Logistics Center (OO-ALC) ranges.

Also, yesterday I heard "Death 12" talking with Cleveland Center on 379.200 Mhz. It mentioned doing a "flyby". I believe this was for the Dayton Air Show.

Since the MONIX callsign site is down, anybody know who "Death 12" is?

B-1 or B-2 possibly?

Frank

Frank,

DEATH 12 is the B-52H from the 509th BW at Whiteman AFB.

Correction, it was a B-2, Whiteman has no B-52s.

No guess as to the MAGICs. MAGIC is a static call used by NATO E-3 AWACS, but it's doubtful there would be a flight of two up in the same part of the USA, and they usually give Mickies, not ask for them.

A 'Mickey' is a special signal that synchronizes radios for a frequency-hopping mode used for anti-jam purposes.

BIGFOOT is the NORAD/NORTHCOM Western Air Defense Sector Operations Center at McChord AFB in Washington. They have remote communications outlet sites all over the place.

Finally, DEATH 12 was a B-2 that had a busy day on the air show circuit: Dayton Air Show, Thunder Over Michigan air show at KYIP and then Northern Neighbors Day air show/open house at Minot AFB ND.

By the way, if there was a DEATH 12 up, there was probably a DEATH 11 up somewhere too.

In addition to their "SPIRIT" static callsign, also the b-2's nickname, they really like using rather morbid callsigns like DEATH ##, DESTROY ##, etc. but they gotta be creative, since DOOM, GHOST, SPECTRE, etc. are already taken by other units!

Going back to the MAGICs, I finally just listened to the recorded audio now, & they're obviously fighter-types practicing intercepts on each-other, etc. Maybe Mark Meece has a good reason for thinking it's an F-16 out of Great Falls, but I looked up the tailcode given by his wingman to BIGFOOT when he passed the VID (visual identification) intercept data, and according to the F-16.net serial # database, it's an F-16C Block 30 assigned to the 134th FS, 158th FW Vermont ANG.

I just checked, and the 120th FW out of Great Falls currently operates F-15s, having transitioned from F-16s last year.

My take on this-

MAGIC - usually an E3 otherwise a fighter who is designating targets/controlling another fighter
BIGFOOT - McChord AFB surveilance controller

Mickey - a Have Quick timing signal
