I'm just starting to get into military monitoring and I have heard a couple times Command Post 1 on 311.000 reeling out streams of numbers and letters. Whats that about ?

311.000mhz am is MAC primary and 321.000mhz.am is secondary. These are nationwide.

EAMs on 311.0 MHz?
Did you hear the message from the beginning? Did the communicator say something like: Do not answer, prepare to copy the message then say: message follows: (As you copied) 4 foxtrot sierra mike 4 juliet golf hotel quebec alpha papa victor yankee & so on? If it sounded like that it was an EAM (Emergency action message) that Stratcom transmits to the combined stratigic military forces. I have listened to them on 11.175 MHz 8.776 MHz & 8.992 MHz HF in the past, I never heard them on 311.0 MHz though, must be something new or I just didn't listen to 311.0 MHz at the right times. I am just scratching the surface with the info I have, however BMT (a RR member) might read this & fill you in on exactly how this sytem works.

Doomsday: Not can but when?
NET5 you outdid yourself with that excellent video piece, I remember some off those scenes in Jason Robards "THE DAY AFTER" & Arnold & Linda Hamiltons "Terminator II-Judgement day". I knew a missile jockey who was assigned to E.F. Warren AFB when they had the now defunct MX PEACEKEEPER program based there, hell of a nice guy but very screwed up mentally.

Thanks, FLRAILMAN.
Here is another video that I happened to stumble across on YouTube, you might remember it? The title is "First Strike" and the entire film is on YouTube. I think it was a sales pitch for the MX missile program, something I had completely forgotten about in the years since. A very interesting reminder of nuclear deterrence strategy and its value. Here is a link to Part 1:
YouTube - First Strike (Part 1)
And for anybody who might be interested, here is a video taken as part of a missile silo museum tour, where EAM messages and verification procedures are discussed (among other things). The information is dated. However, the verification procedures may be essentially unchanged, as the EAM concept itself does not seemed to have changed much over the years...

Enjoy!

EAMs
If anybody not HF capable is interested in listening to EAMs on a more frequent basis, check out PSR600MDs thread on the Utility Listening forum, he is running a live stream of the GHFS frequencies.

Hi FLRAILMAN,
I know this has wandered off topic a ways, it's a stretch but EAM's are connected to the history of Ye Olde Missile Silos... I've been interested in silos ever since seeing the movie, "Twilight's Last Gleaming." Remember that one from years back?! And things like the Cuban Missile Crisis seared into my mind just how close we came, in a way that perhaps those born after that period can never really understand what it was like to live through. Also, my father-in-law was a member of the Enola Gay ground crew on Tinian during WWII, so this sort of stuff hits close to home.
Thanks for all of your links and helpful information! I really appreciate it.
Cheers!

EAM on 311.0 MHz
Were they: "Strategic Air Command" starring James Stewart, "Fail Safe" starring James Fonda & "Dr. Strangelove" starring Peter Sellers?
Here is a fairly complete list of movies on the subject & contains video clips, enjoy.

Wow, "Strategic Air Command." When I was a kid in Burbank, I used to play in the cockpit of the prop fuselage that was used to film the flight scenes with James Stewart. The whole front of the plane was included. One side of the front fuselage was the "outside" of the plane, with "U.S. Air Force," a SAC crest and a big, blue sash with white stars. The canopy was in place, too. The other side was cut away to show the cockpit interior. All the instruments were in place and so was the stick, although vandals had broken much of it.
My friends and I would sneak under the fence of a big prop storage yard to explore and play in there, and there was all manner of interesting movie props. Almost anything imaginable! Likely all long gone now though...
James Stewart also had a mint condition, yellow Piper Cub that he kept hangared at Hollywood/Burbank Airport. I got to drool over that one, too.

From 1982 to 1988 I served in the US Air Force at Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City South Dakota and worked in the misssile field as a Security Police. I've been down in the "capsule" where these types of messages would have been received and and decoded, etc., also had a chance to go down into the silo to see the missile itself.
Just take a look at my avatar...
