Could be either the result of an alert status change due to the N.Koreans possibly getting ready to test fire an ICBM or a massive military exercise going on in the northwestern Pacific. Check NORAD and milsat frequencies as well.

Hi Crista
If you're thinking about an AOR, look at the 8600. Expensive but it should out perform one of the AOR handhelds.
OR if you can stretch to it, an AR5000

Handhelds and the AOR 8600
I've thought about it ,buut handhelds suit my needs better..
Besides all you really need is the proper antenna...
and reception should be fine..
I havn't really noticed ANY difference between Handhelds and Bases/Mobiles
Except Costs!!
And if your power fails then the Mobiles/BAses are just paperweights at that point..
Thank you though for your advice.
Warmest regards,
Crista

You are aware that you can operate most base radios off 12 volts right? I can operate my entire radio room off of my deep cycle battery and solar panel indefinitely.

If you're interested in a hot receiver, consider the Yupiteru MVT-7100
It's an older model so you can usually find them on ebay at a good price. Coverage is 0.1 khz to 1.6 gHz cont., AM,FM,WFM,USB,LSB is very hot on the military aero band. I've owned one for several years and enjoy it.
