Thumbs down Critique of Popular Communications Air Show Issue 2008

Usually Popular Communications does a great job, but this year's Air Show issue was minimal, at best.

The 2007 issue's frequencies were quite extensive, but this year they only gave out "selected" air show frequenices; just a meager sample of their usual frequency smörgåsbord.

I'm disappointed of an otherwise outstanding publication.

I think you have things a bit confused my friend. Pop Comm has never done an annual airshow issue. Their March 2008 issue had a feature by Tom Swisher but that is a first for them. The mag you may have that confused with is Monitoring Times.

We have been doing an annual airshow issue for the last 9 years. In fact, this year's issue got some big we had to pull it from the Milcom monthly column pages and put it up front in the feature portion of the magazine.

So go back to the bookstore and look for the real deal -- Monitoring Times magazine and our March 2008 Annual Airshow issue. We are definitely NOT PopComm. ;-))

A great source of airshow freqs is right here. In the days leading up to an airshow in your area, check your state forum, and the Aircraft forum.

Last year I was able to build a nice list from people who went to the show and posted their confirmed freqs. I did the same, confirmed, re-posted, and the list snowballed from there.

AND - if the Blue Angels are coming to your town, for example, check the state forums where there was already a show. Since CLE's airshow isn't until September, I was able to troll the other state forums and grab freqs used at their airshows.

Sure, though I am going to see the Thunderbirds at San Angelo--the first show of the 2008 season. I'll program last year's frequencies in the meantime.

I went back to the bookstore--they still only have the Feb issue of Monitoring Times. So it goes.

I'll confirm any frequencies if I make it to the air show and manage to hear anything.
