Default 154.085

I can hear what appears to be a facility (correctional or the like) on 154.085 this morning. It is a repeater output. According to the database St Peter Security Hospital is licensed for the freq and that is as close as I can see for a facility.Band conditions have been up laetly but I find it unlikely. Wisconsin has mostly county / city PW on this freq. Any ideas ? I will listen thru the day to see if it really is a band opening. Here in Lino my antenna favors to the north due to obstructions.

I don't have any answers for you, however I have a question. I try to learn a little here and a little there so be patient with me.When you mention an"open band" just what is that? St Peter is a long ways from Lino is that normal? Thanks in advanced for your feedback.

Thanks for the question. Normally on VHF Hi (150 to 170 mhz roughly) I would expect a range of 30 to 40 miles with my existing setup when listening to base / repeaters. Sometimes there are band "enhancements" or skip where the signals present where we can hear signals farther than the normal line of site range. The more I listened to that 154.085 the more convinced I am that is was St Peter Security Hospital due to the nature of the communications. I say the band was "open" because it was outside my normal range of listening. There are many forms of enhanced propagations, ducting, E skip, etc. If you search for VHF skip you will find many descriptions of how a signal can be heard further than the normal line of site mileage. Sometimes the skip is very short lived, other times it opens for a a few hours.
