By MARGARET BAKER
A motorist who led sheriff's deputies on a vehicle chase through Jackson County into Alabama is in custody now, charged with transporting narcotics across state lines, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said.
The suspect, whose identity was not immediately available, is accused of transporting 150 pounds of marijuana that was found in a toolbox in the back of his pickup truck.
The chase started on Interstate 10 at Highway 57 around 11:45 a.m., ending a few miles into Mobile County, when the suspect drove his vehicle into the median, wrecked, jumped out and tried to flee on foot before he was captured.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Department, the Mobile County Sheriff's Department, the FBI Safe Streets Task Force and the Narcotics Task Force of Jackson County are investigating. Byrd said he expects to suspect to face federal drug trafficking charges.
