A fifth police district will be created in Jackson's downtown and midtown areas by next week, police officials announced Wednesday.
Police hope the new precinct will help them better patrol the city's reviving commercial core while cracking down on crime in the surrounding dilapidated neighborhood.
"There is a lot of construction going on downtown, with the (Capital City) Convention Center, the Pinnacle (at Jackson Place) and the planned entertainment district (on Farish Street) going up," Assistant Chief Lee Vance said.
"But even if the (Farish Street project) doesn't come, we have enough going on to warrant downtown patrol."
Precinct 5 will overlap a southern portion of Precinct 4 and an eastern portion of Precinct 2.
The boundary lines follow Woodrow Wilson Avenue and Gallatin, Mill, Marshall, Jefferson, South and Monument streets. Narcotics unit supervisor Wendell Watts will lead the group of 15 officers and a supervisory sergeant.
