Exclamation Kansas City

Kansas City Council members last week urged the city staff to continue pursuing a public-safety radio upgrade — and said they would figure out how to pay for it later.
“It’s a critical need,” said Councilwoman Deb Hermann, chairwoman of the council’s Finance and Audit Committee.
Assistant City Manager Rich Noll told the council Thursday that radio towers and other critical infrastructure are aging and system failures pose a grave risk to firefighters, police and the public they serve.
The cost of the improvements to eight radio towers and other equipment is expected to run about $30 million to $35 million.

From the KC Star article
Quote:
Noll said the portable radios also were designed to be compatible with systems used in Independence and Johnson County.
Independence is currently P25 digital, and Johnson County is set to be P25 by the end of this year. KCMO will likely do the same thing once they are ready to upgrade. If I remember correctly, the ultimate goal is to have the entire KC area switched to P25 interoperability within the next few years, so you won't find any proprietary systems (OpenSky or ProVoice) around here.
