Not sure, I wouldn't think they would need too much to get signal. Most sites are easily received I would think. Someone else may know more than me.

a 1/4 does not have that much gain...but you have a point if the repeaters or what ever they call them are close..they my not need gain...

A 1/4 wave in the center of the roof will outperform a 5/8 wave on the trunk or fenders.
Judging by the picture it appears that the roof antenna is one of the wideband types with a thick whip.
Some MOSWIN sites use federal frequencies in the 162-174 band. A standard 5/8 wave mobile antenna will not cover the whole 150-174 band.

wait ......1/4 wave has more gain than a 5/8 wave?...let me think about that...

They are marketed as "wideband 1/4 wave" antennas. Google it. I see them a lot on federal vehicles an others that need wide frequency coverage. They cost a lot more than the chrome nut type 1/4 wave antennas with the thin whip that doesn't require a spring like the one on the rear right fender or trunk. The picture is not good enough to see the base of the one on the roof clearly but it is proably a Maxrad MWV1365S VHF and UHF Wideband Antennas No Tune PCTEL

No. I didn't say a 1/4 wave has more gain. I said a 1/4 wave in the center of the roof will outperform a 5/8 wave on the trunk or fender.

Thumbs up MHP Antenna layout....

This is from a friendly MHP radio tech....

Top center spring loaded is a 1/4 wave, 18.5" long.

Behind it on the roof is a phantom whip less for the 148.600 low-band repeater

On the chargers, passenger side trunk is either a VHF or an 800 MHz 1/4 wave for the scanner.

Center of trunk is base loaded 1/4 wave for 42 MHz, trunk drivers side is a 1/4 wave for VHF mobile radio.

On hood is a 700 MHz 1/4 wave for the 700 side of the MoSWIN radio, and back trunk deck is another 700 MHz 1/4 wave for the mobile repeater for the MoSWIN extenders.

Great info! Can you tell us if the 148.600 low-band repeater is used state-wide? For some reason I remember it being used in most places, but not all.

Good info there.

Does anyone know if there has been activity at the Massman site or am I missing it all?

I would have to say it is used statewide.

Our resident MHP Radio tech lurks here on a regular basis, maybe he will chime in.

It's do not think it is a repeater per se but it is a "mobile extender" which is kinda like a repeater that is located within the troopers cars.
The frequency is still used here in the St. Louis area.

At least that is how they were licensed when you could find the info on the FCC site.
