Default Offtopic: HT1000 Programing Cable

there is a schematic for a programing cable on batlabs, and i am wondering if this is for a ribless cable for the HT1000, i can build it, but i want to know if i need the Rib box for the schematic,

http://www.batlabs.com/images/mt2kpin.gif

also,

do i just connect the open wire to the radio, and plug the 25 pin into my computer?

any help on how to build it would be great

Yes you need a RIB, the only Portable that does not use the RIB is the XTS 5000 and 2500 series radios.. You can get a HT-1000 Programing cable on ebay...

Not that I have seen. The "Pro" series radios have "ribless cables too. HT-750-1250-1550.

There are three listed on ebay. Can't say if they really work, but they are listed as ribless cables for jedi type radios.

Yes, there are "ribless" cables for the HT1000 and other jedi protables but all they are is a cable with a built in rib. The cable still needs it own power source to operate. None of thse cables are from the factory.

In my opinion, such cables are a huge waste. You are still paying for a rib but you cannot use it with any other radios and it must be powered by a 9v battery instead of a wallwart and a battery is never to be trusted when programming your $1000 radio.

You should use a laptop with a good battery and plugged in to the wall outlet and a rib pluged in with a good battery inplace. If you ever had the power go out in the middle of an upload you would understand why.

Not necessarily. A friend of mine bought a ribless cable for a Jedi (HT1000) series that requires no external power. It uses very low current devices and is able to use the 5 volts present on one of the serial port pins.

Failing that, you could very easily modify the power to take 5 volts off of a USB port or a PS2 keyboard/mouse port...they all provide a very stable 5 volts with more than enough current.

The standard RIB uses 9 volts to program. If you can get by with 5 v, hey, thats fine, but there has to be a reason for using 9volts. Maybe its just so you can more easily use a battery. I dont know.

But the bottom line is: unless you want to run with risk of creating an expensive door stop I would spend the money and get a facyory rib and a factory cable and use a reliable power source (such as the wall...).

Whats out there as far as aftermarket programming equipment is simply not as reliable.
