If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

The "KEY FAIL" message is telling you that it is a secure-equipped radio and that the encryption keys are gone. You can make this go away by going into the CPS and unchecking the "Secure Equipped" box. I can't recall off hand if this is in the "Radio Wide" menu in the CPS or if there is a separate tree item for Secure.

The "ALPHA" message is probably just the channel or talkgroup that's selected.

You can read the firmware versions as well as some other information (including the radio serial number) by pressing the "HOME" key 5 times after the radio boots up. Don't wait too long or you'll have to power down and do it again. At the end of all the version information, you'll be in TEST MODE. You can use the MODE switch to select "EXIT" and then hit the "HOME" key to exit this mode and return to normal, or you can just power-cycle the radio to reset it.

Or you could select "Infinite Key Retention" to have the radio never lose it's key.

Both of these options are listed under the Secure section.
