my dad has an mt1000 8ch vhf. It was stored for several months with a dead battery due to charger getting fried by power surge. Charger has been replaced and shows battery is fully charged however it does not power on. Any ideas on the problem?

I would try another battery. If that doesn't work, it may have fried the MT.

the radio was not in the charger during the surge. He has tried 2 different batteries with same effect.

it sounds like you may be using an aftermarket battery some of which have
battery contact issues. some of these manufactures claim they make an
identical battery case and contacts but it ain't so.

try this - try using clip leads from a known good power source. if i recall correctly
i think these batteries are 9.6V so by observing the proper polarity try using clip
leads and connect from the mt1000 contacts to a know good 9.6V power source
and see if the radio will power up. if not the radio has an internal problem - perhaps
a blown pico fuse which i think is on the bottom near the battery rail or contacts.

good luck.....

Yes the pico fuse is visible on the bottom. As a quick test, with a known good battery, you could take a small piece of wire, and "short" across the fuse, slide the battery back on, to see if it powers up. If it does I would certainly replace the fuse, unless you don't care about the portable burning up should another problem arise.
