Default Motorola HT question

Hey all,

This is just out of a curiosity mood. I live in Marin Co., CA. I know this is a no-no but was just wondering if an XTS series radio *could be* programmed to this system? It doesn't seem like it needs a system key or anything like that. One of my friends has an XTS who he wants to carry with him on patrol on top of the Department issued radio. They won't program it because it's not "county bought".

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

-Frank C.

Trunked system or conventential system. Big difference weather it's a no no or not.

and if your "friend" values his job, he will not program any radio to affiliate or transmit on his or any departments' network without authorization.

Aside, programming a Smartzone radio is possible if one has the right tools, however duplicating an individual ID will set off a flag in the system and cause that ID (and associated radio) to be disabled. Improper programming by persons untrained and with the wrong information can not only result in a radio that doesn't work correctly, but can create problems for the system administrators and other users. Smartzone requires affiliation to work properly, and thus, only authorized persons should be programming radios on the network.

A non-functioning or improperly programmed radio carried by a public safety worker is an accident waiting to happen. If your "friend's" employer doesn't want him to have a radio, that is their policy and he is bound to comply. If his radio shop or system management says NO, than that is that.

Buy a scanner or tell your friend to go over to batboard and read up. There are plenty of people passively monitoring systems like this everywhere with XTS and other types of motorola radios. It can be done descretly without the system knowing you are there if you read up on it. Good luck and have fun.

I know a guy who can program EDACS systems, he has a local one programmed in his radio for nyc, but i think that doesn't require a programming key and he knows what he's doing, but i also KNOW OF a guy who was busted about 5 years back for interfering with a public safety communications system and he got 10 year probation and is never allowed to possess any type of radio equipment ever again, not even bubble pack, and that was right here in the bronx, i heard the FCC tracked him down and SOD knocked his door down while his kids were watching saturday mornining cartoons, I think he programmed out a federal system in an XTS,
But in the long run, a scanner would work better because the ever changing technoligy of P25 systems, and if the talkgroups go encrypted, change or go out of service, your SOL, you wouldn't want someone piggybacking off your landline, A scanner is more easily programmable, and to get CPS with a system key is like stealing the mona lisa, that is to even get a system key without making your radio a brick, Stick with a 396XT, works just as good and is also computer programmable...
