Default XTL5000 home install

NOOB question! I have been working radios for 10 years but mainly tactical and heavy HF systems. I have worked a little with XTS5000's and Moto's RSS software CPS. I haven’t dabbled into XTL's.

Can I take an XTL5000 mobile base station and use it as a desktop console? I have the installation manual but it only deals with vehicles. I have some Moto power supplies as well (~15VDC) and a ton of accessory cables as well

Default Xtl5000

Where there is a will... there is a way!! haha.. The two most important things to take in to consideration: How are you going to power the radio? and what kind of antenna you will be using.... There are several different power supplys you can find online.. and antenna solutions.

Id say its well possible. We have XTL2500s that will be backup radios at each dispatch console. Looks like they have their own Motorola power supply for base usage.

I have two XTL's at home running on an Astron 20 amp power supply. I used the spectra desk stands for the radios. Works great.

Here is what I got:

Moto power supply HPN4001B
Moto VHF XTL-5000 W7

I have VHF whip antennas out the arse, so I am not too concerned with that. The thing is, is when I plug in the radio (2 prong 1male 1female plug) they don’t turn on. I tried this with 5 different radios with the same results. The PS is good. I tested it with a multimeter. Is there a pin I need to short on the accessory port to get these to power up?

I'd suggest you visit the batlabs website Batboard Index page

They're all about using Moto equipment on the secondary market. Someone there will be able to answer your questions in a second.

There might be an ignition sense wire (our XTL5k's were acting weird until we got that sorted out). Batlabs will probably have the details on what you need to know.
