It's normal for chargers and batteries to get warm when charging. For them to get hot, it would suggest something wrong with the battery.

Without part number, pictures or something else to work off of I can't give you any more info than that.

What I can tell you is that a battery for that radio would run you under $40, and would give you the peace of mind that it isn't going to crap out prematurely. OEM (Motorola) batteries are a safe bet, but I've had good luck with the Honeywell brand also, specifically the NiMH 2500mah batteries.

Could be a faulty charger, but that is difficult to ascertain without being able to test it out. If you purchased this stuff used from e-bay or some such site, I'd count on tossing the batteries and starting fresh.

While long distance diagnoses are always speculative, it sounds like your battery has one or more shorted cells (there are six singlecells inside the battery pack). This is not uncommon as batteries reach the end of their service life. You need a new battery.

Check the voltage on the battery and then again while in the charger.

Battery voltage before charge must be 6 volts or more. Less indicates a shorted cell.
Battery voltage during charge must be no more than 9 volts. Should start out a 6 volts going up to 8.4 volts fully charged.

There is a known problem with some Motorola chargers for Jedi radio batteries.

Yes they do overheat the batteries. And they overcharge them when left in the charger after the Green indicator comes on. Why, the Complete cycle with the Green indicator continues to charge the battery.

There is a simple mod that only reduces the charge rate in the complete mode below the recommended rate.

The MT2000 and the MTS2000 use the same battery options and the same charger requirements.

So it should not "mess up my motorola mts2000 flashport model 3 type" radio.

Battery recommendation: BZ7144MH by Battery Zone.
