• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Pretty basic question. Do the XPR6550 need to be purchased in either VHF or UHF or can they do both?

They say they do:

Frequency range
VHF: 136-174 MHz. UHF: 403-470 MHz

Just not sure if there is a separate model for UHF or VHF.

Thanks

The XPR6550 are indeed separate radios for VHF and UHF, and in fact, the UHF come in two models, one that covers 403-470MHz, and one that covers 450-520MHz. The VHF version covers the entire VHF band.

So yes, if you want VHF and UHF XPR6550's, you'll need to buy two radios.

Or, you can spend the big bucks and get yourself an APX dual-band. ;)

The APX does not do DMR

Since when? What do you think P25 / 7x is? Digital. Unless you're referring to a different DMR?

You mean it won't work with MotoTRBO. If they aren't doing connect plus or privacy plus, which are MotoTRBO features, then an APX will work just fine for Digital UHF/VHF.

An APX does the P25 flavour of digital. A TRBO radio does the DMR flavour of digital.

An APX will not talk to a TRBO radio.

The OP is asking about the XPR series of radio which is TRBO hence your "get an APX" comment is meaningless in this thread.

In some forms the APX and MotoTRBO radios will work together (ex: Conventional). It was a hypothetical statement. "Nothing in life is certain, except taxes and death." OP never made mention of using the Digital portion of the MotoTRBO... hence my response.

Sorry I strayed off topic.

They will talk to each other in analog mode ONLY. DMR and P25(including P25 2X TDMA and P25 phase 2TDMA) are completely different digital protocols. The only way an XPR radio can talk to an APX is in analog. Wether it is repeated or simplex. So yes asking about a XPR, I am going with the OP wanting to use it digitally rather than just analog.

Yup P25 IS digital, a protocol which was commissioned by APCO and is called Project25. MotoTRBO is DMR, also digital, but is a completely different protocol than P25.

Apples to oranges. I get it. No need to beat a dead horse.
