Default Motorola XTS3500R

I recently purchased a Motorola XTS3500R off ebay, and it needs to be programmed and recased.

Can i purchase a XTS3000 case and recase this radio into a 3000 series case? it is a model I XTS3500R

Also, is the CPS used to program the XTS/Astro Series the same to program the 3500R? i am looking for conventional programming only.

Pretty sure the cases are interchangeable, but don't quote me on that.

As for the software, no, you'll have to get the 3500 RSS which runs in pure DOS only.

ETA: you won't have to worry about trunking since they were conventional only radios anyway.

No, you'll need XTS3500 RSS to program it.

Actually they did support trunking. I've got a VHF XTS3500 which has trunking. I don't know if it was officially Motorola supported but there are some out there with trunking.

Oh, OK. I was going by the sales brochure I had but I've never touched an XTS3500 before.

Yes.

The problem with the 3500's is the lack of support. They weren't a very common radio.

Basically what you've got for firmware and flash is what you're stuck with. I don't think I've ever seen a firmware upgrade for one.

Encryption boards are very rare. Unfortunately they use a board that's not used by any other model.

I am only looking to program it for conventional use RX only, i got the radio radio off ebay for $19 and basically just using it for RX only, it is 470mhz-512mhz.
Now my problem is finding the programming for it. i am in not rush to get it programmed, but i would like to use it and have it programmed up. So if anyone knows how or where i can get it programmed, please let me know.

Just had one more quick question,

I need a new volume knob for the 3500R, Can i purchase any knob set for the XTS Series radio? or does it have to be 3500R specific?

the knob itself or the knob cover? the knob cover just slips off, an XTS3K one should work just fine. I have a few, I'd be glad to send you one if needed.

The XTS3500.. Is physically the same radio as an XTS3000 same everything, same case, same programming set up, and same accessories. The only difference is internal. It uses a different Software package that is for the 3500 only and DOS based, the encryption boards are 3500 specific

Wasn't the xts 3500r made specially for the FDNY. Or was it the XTS3000r ? I think it's the 3000r now.

No .. the 3500's were an in between model, a few other agencies had them as they were availble in VHF and UHF but not 800. The Feds had some also.

This is how i received the radio, it looks like it just needs the knob covering, but i am not sure if i need the kit or just the knob?
I really would appreciate the knob if you have a spare one, not sure if you have an extra uhf stuff laying around for 470-512mhz?, But id throw you a few bucks

A little ammonia and water along with a toothbrush will make it look as good as new!

That was my next question to, I wasnt sure if i could use something like that to clean it, because i really didn't want to have to recase it, i am still looking for a knob and antenna if anyone has one or the other, i'd gladly pay for them!

The XTS service manual states you can use one drop of dish detergent in one gallon of water with a toothbrush to carefully clean the housing. Obviously you won't need the whole gallon, that's just the ratio needed and you need to be careful not to get water where it shouldn't be.

Ive used Simple green and an old toothbrush and gotten cases that dirty clean. The drop of soap in a gallon is useless.
