• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

That's like asking what a car costs. Which is anywhere from a few hundred bucks for a junker to 2.5 million or more for a super rare collector's treasure.

The APX8000 can cost over 8000 dollars per unit if it's well loaded on features in all bands.

A base model 1.5, no keypad or front display, probably starts at around 2000 dollars.

But finding a dealer to sell one to you will be difficult. I bought a new APX6000 from Bearcom a few years ago and I checked with them on the 8000 and they said that Motorola won't allow private sales onf the 8000. So there you go.

Not for a few years, you won't. Somebody will eventually game the Moto parts system and start building up new radios from parts kits and selling them. Which, strange as it may seem, is legal. Moto lost a lawsuit over that very issue years ago.

I wouldn't even mind getting an ALT 8000 but it'd have to be priced very low for its type.

A joke I've heard a few times is the brand new price is in the model number, i.e., APX8000 price = ~ $8k, APX7000 price = ~ $7k, XTS5000 price = ~ $5k, etc.

This was actually relayed to me at a trade show - this is a price benchmark for the dealers and sales folks. Model number roughly reflects the price.

I'd noticed the same thing. The model number really does represent the price tag when the radio is fully loaded with options. It does seem to hold true for the public safety line of radios.

I see a hole in the Motorola lineup right now.

One band radio: APX6000
Dual band radio: APX7000
Tri-band radio: Empty hole
Quad (all) band radio: APX8000

This, because in every radio except for the 8000, UHF is split into two ranges.

I suppose it's possible to buy a 7000 equipped with UHF R1 and UHF R2. But I suspect that is the rarest version.

And still no 900 MHz version of any of these. I wonder about that.
