• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm looking to purchase a new portable radio. I currently have a pair of HT1250's and a XPR 7550 VHF. I'm looking for a new UHF portable and have been looking at an APX 6000 Model 1.5. I do like the XPR series, but am wanting something a little different as well. I will only be using the UHF on conventional frequencies, and won't be using any of the fancy features for either. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with using both on conventional analog frequencies and has any comments. Pros and cons of both? Any issues with either?

A few clarifications needed:
--Will you be using this exclusively on analog conventional?
--Will you be buying this online through EBay or similar site or are you buying this new through a local dealer?
The reason that I ask the above is to help you figure out which radio will be best suited for your purposes....if you buying online make sure you "buy the seller and not the radio"...that has been said many times and it means that you do research on the sellers history and make sure they are selling radios in good condition that are not ALT DEV Junk.

In my duties I carry both an APX 7000 and an APX 6000XE and I do prefer the size of the 6000 XE while I love the one watt speaker in the 7000.

If I were to buy the APX 6000, I would be buying it through a respected seller through one of the forums used with tags. If I were to buy the the XPR 7550, I would be buying it new through a local dealer.

If you can buy a 6000 at a decent price with legit tags & history then by all means get the 6000. Like I said I love the size of the 6000 and with the right flashcode you can have options that make programming on the fly easy through FPP.
