• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Depends on what you're using it for and your needs really. If it's for a simple analog 16 channel max operation like a business you can look into the CP line. If its an emergency service application I would look into the xpr or apx series. If you're just needing conventional analog the apx is a bit overkill.

Using it for emergency service, our county uses analog but our mutual aid company in neighboring county uses digital.

What type of digital are they using?
Is it digital trunked?

There are a few different types of digital that are used in public safety systems, P25, NXDN, DMR, etc. They are not interchangeable, so you need to know which one they are using.
Also, digital makes it really easy for them to use encryption, access controls, etc. so before you spend your hard earned money on a digital radio, be sure you'll be able to use it on their system. If they are running encryption or any sort of access control, you won't be able to use your radio on their system without them letting you.

And, as always, if you are going to use your radio on another agencies radio system, you MUST (FCC rules) have written approval from the license holder of the other system. They are the ones that are responsible for the operation of their radio system, and someone else adding radios isn't OK. There is no exception to this rule for public safety agencies, volunteers, hobbyists, etc.

Kenwood TK-5310 is an older design radio. Any orders for it should be simply for replacing old/broken models. If you're going with a new fleet, go NX-5300.

Yeah, the TK-5x10 are older radios, but still in production.

I'd also suggest looking at the NX-5300. More capable radio, will do analog, DMR, NXDN and P25.

Just be aware, if the other agency is running a P25 trunked system, you'll need to order the radio with the P25 trunked option, as well as get the appropriate system keys.

Or an XTS1500 or XTS2500. They are also P25 and analog radio's. Great durable public safety radios

Only problem with the XTS series and XTL while parts exist and third party shops fix them they are soon to be eol from motorola depot and flash upgrades are pretty much over unless you find someone out there with them. Public safety is moving to the xpr and apx lines. Just a thought to keep in mind is unless you got a local tech shop your on your own with them.

The XTS series is the last P25 radio series that doesn't cost a fortune to buy so it's the next best thing even if parts are scarse

I dont think the XTS are kenwoods will work for him as I believe the counties are on different bands. Analog UHF digital 800mhz.

Will need two seperate radios or apx series and prepare to bend over.

You can get a quite capable EFJ dual bander for a fraction of the cost of a 7k or 8k if money is an issue.

If you're going to get a Kenwood single band, I'd get a VP5430 or VP6430. Those radios are awesome, and getting better every day. Just an opinion tho'.........

Good luck.
