Ham radio on Storage Wars:NY
Just saw this week's episode I recorded on tape (yes, I still use VHS....)
Candy and Courtney, the women that run their thrift business out of a van, had bought a locker with apparently nothing inside other than a mattress and a box of crap for $25. They found an ICOM IC-7000 in that box. (I wish I was that lucky!) Of course, they didn't know what kind of radio it was ("I feel like this is some sort of illegal radio device"). Anyway, the producers hooked them up with "gadget expert" Tom N2YTF at a park where he had a portable yagi set up. "Cool", I thought, "an amateur radio demo". There was a contact on 17 meters with Mike G8CMU. The one thing that left me somewhat soured was the subtitles from Mike's transmission. He clearly said "G8CMU, you're 5 9 QSL?". The subtitles said "We are aliens here to invade earth surrender immediately". I realize this was likely a BAD attempt at humor by the producers, but I personally don't appreciate humor that makes people look (or sound) like weirdoes.
Tom did tell the ladies that in the condition that radio was worth $1000.
Incidentally, Tom's bio on QRZ says "Thanks for watching Storage Wars NY!" Wonder how he felt after the broadcast.
Oversensitive? Maybe so..... Did anyone else see this episode?
What did you think?

Oversensitive? Yes.
It was meant as a joke for the amusement of the ladies, not to poke fun at hams. They had no idea what it was, so the idea of the subtitles was playfully suggesting that they found a device that lets them listen to aliens invading Earth.
Completely harmless.
Now had the subtitles read "I'm 40 years old and sitting in my Communications Center in mom's basement listening to 50 police scanners at the same time and posting everything I hear on the Internet in real-time and I haven't showered or shaved for a week."...that would be offensive to hams.

I was just being over the top sarcastic in showing that it could've been much worse, not actually taking shots at hams.

I'm curious to know how much he got paid so the producers could borrow his radio and plant it in the blue box beneath the stuffed animal and dirty cushion.
That show is so fake.

Is it still offensive if it's true?

Fake or not, Courtney is hot. I forgot about the radio after seeing her...but seriously, I do have to wonder if this (and other expensive items) like the Rolex, isn't a plant.
Dave Hester, from the original Storage Wars, is suing A&E networks claiming that producers of the show do indeed plant expensive items in units, and claims he has paperwork including emails, canceled checks, etc to back up his allegations. He's asking for $3.5 million:
'Storage Wars' Fake? Dave Hester Lawsuit Alleges Reality Show Is Rigged (UPDATE)
Gotta make you wonder though- a minty IC-7000, no bracket, no power cable- in some dirty dingy tote underneath a moldy teddy bear (remember Ms. Hottie Courtney thought it was a fur coat hence why she bid on the unit to begin with, only to find out it was some cheap county fair prize) in a near empty storage locker? If it is a genuine find, I'd think I'd be checking the QRZ forums for "stolen radios" and running the serial through NCIC- my money says that radio is as hot as Courtney...hot of a different kind.

Yes, the show is fake and scripted. The A/E show Storage Hunters with Allen and Tone they were filmed in Ft.Lauderdale and one of the local general managers of a local storage shed company here where I live spotted the film crew at a local storage shed where they were going to be filming at staging a Ferrari coming in on a wrecker and they were putting it in a storage shed they were going to use on the tv show. Later that day when everyone left the filming crew returned back with the wrecker service picking up the Ferrari.

I'd love to know why Dave Hester is seeking damages. I'd imagine he's getting paid a handsome sum as a cast member on that show. Now that he doesn't have his thrift store anymore, it would seem as though he would need the show to be fake in order to continue acting. Otherwise they'd have to kill off his character and write him off of the show.

Storage Wars is a great tv show. Just goes to show you that you can get a lot for $25.00. This is like going to Goodwill or a garage sale in your local area. You never know what you will find. I have made excellent bargins on two way radios, shortwave receivers, scanners, etc and they work. Wow If I could buy a ICOM-IC-7000 for $25.00 that would be the deal of all deals. Then turnaround and sell it and make a profit!!! Welcome to Real TV. The show Storage Wars that I saw was in Los Angles, CA in 2012 and a man bought a lot of items for $50.00. IN the lot was a 2 meter mobile radio and when he took the radio to another ham the 2 meter mobile radio worked. The Ham made a contact on the the radio that came out of the storage locker. The person who bought the entire lot made is $50.00 back and made a profit

Remember why they started doing so many "reality" shows to begin with though... They were so much cheaper to make than some scripted show with high paid actors and expensive production costs.
Now that it's pretty obvious these are not reality/documentaries as they would lead one to believe, and the cast members are becoming such big celebrities, the networks are going to have to pony up the cash or they're going to lose their talent. I guess that's why they keep introducing new characters and starting new storage/pawn/trucker shows in other locations. And I'm sure that's probably the motivation behind Dave Hester's lawsuit. The networks want the ratings of a scripted prime time show on a real low budget but don't want to pay their cast.

The average person who knows nothing from nothing would think it was a CB radio and the dialog would fit accordingly. now on a lighter note did anyone tell you these are reality shows meaning fake? well now ya know.

Question for the fourm: Can someone post a link and the video of this show to back up the post of the ICOM-IC 7000 going for $25.00? Wecome to the game of life. Some peoople have all the money in the world to buy this stuff. Must be nice to re sell and make a profit. Does the profit of the buyer get reported to the IRS on a long or short form at the end of the year as additional income?

You are asking US to provide a link to back up a post????
No problem... This is how it's done:
Watch Storage Wars: New York Full Episodes & Video Online - aetv.com
Look at right around the 7 minute mark on the video to see them find it... and around the 16:20 minute mark where they meet up with Tom N2YTF and find out how much it's worth. You may have to watch some commercials to get to those points in the video.
In case you didn't get the hint from the other posts, these shows can be highly scripted and phony.
I hope in the future, when we ask you to back up a claim you make in a post, you will provide those that ask with an actual link.... as has been done for you here.
