Default State Patol Tower question

Hey it looks 2 me that all the state patol run off the same frequency so now i am living in Johnson nebraska 45 minutes east of beatrice. Well the other day i was listening and i heard a police chase going on in fillmore country just a country north of were i live. The state patrol tower is in Hebron and the one were i live now in located in auburn so is my scanner that powerful that i can get a police chase from 120 miles away? and if i can how come i cant hear my home county police frequency?

Most likely, what you were catching was being repeated to the area repeaters so all area law enforcement know that it was coming their way. That's just speculation, but no, I doubt your scanner is capable of pulling in a signal 120 miles away, unless it was atmospherics.

Do have the correct frequencies programmed in?
Program the 800Mhz frequencies in and see if they switch to 800 like richardson county. If they are using 800 they could be using P25 digital like richardson county is with their 800 system. If you hear anything on the 800 let us know please.

although there is a chance the traffic was being repeated, depending on your scanner, antenna, and location (like on top of a hill) it is completely possible (especially in the low band.) With any of my new GRE scanners connected to my antenna tuned specifically to the 42mhz range, i have picked up 39.9 traffic from well over 100 miles away.

what scanner/antenna combination were you using?

You mentioned you "can't hear" your local police... Again what scanner and antenna combination are you using? Is this portable, mobile, base scanner?

You live in Auburn? Last I knew they too had some 800MHz freq licenses in the works....

So I mean if you have a 75' tower with a low band antenna at the top I'm not going to doubt you're listening to NSP from 120 miles away, compared to why you cannot hear local stuff on UHF or 800MHz. We need more info.

The 800 system could be conventional analog with some sort of CTCSS/DP tone embedded in the transmissions, but doubful or his scanner may be set incorrectly, say if he had a PRO 96, perhaps it is set to CT or AM.

Could Auburn be over ESK or OpenSky? Just a guess, but,

more info please......

NO. ESK is part of EDACS trunking system and OpenSky is a trunking system. Their liceinse is for conventional analog and digital FM traffic.
More than likely they are going to be using either P25(IMBE), mixed mode or analog. With radios having the capability to use P25.
Also listen to 453.550 I believe it is emergency gov. mainly heard storm spotters June 7 but it could be someone else.

I see that Orion is linked at the bottom of the database page for Nemaha county. If this is the case and Auburn using Orion, you'd need a P25 capable scanner, of which the Pro-163 is not.

Might this be the issue? Or is Orion only used for OPPD in Nemaha county?

I sort of thought so, after not seeing anything listed for public safety there.
