Howdy, everyone!
I own three Uniden scanners, including the B796D, BCD396T, and, most recently, the BCD396XT. I also have a Radio Shack Pro97 and the Pro2055.
I think the 396T (and now the 396XT) is probably my all-time fave! What's not to love - digital trunking, 6000 slot dynamic memory, and excellent sensitivity! The 996T / 996XT are just as good, but you can't carry them around with you! :*)

I'm happy with it. It is way better than the 996T and 796. I can not compare it with any GRE or Ratshack scanners.
I have notice better audio levels, the digital audio is the same as analog. It doesn't drop out as much as the 996 and 796 do.
If you want a mobile/base wait about two to three monthes thats when the 996XT is suppose to come out.

Howdy, everyone!
I, too, would have to say that I'm liking my 396XT, although I haven't yet had time to transition all of my system files from the 396 to the 396XT.
The audio quality from the DouglasCounty (aka ORION) system is quite a bit better on the 396XT, in my opinion.
From Murray, the 396XT performs pretty close to the 396, as far as signal reception goes. I still have drop-outs from time to time, but that's to be expected considering the distance from the nearest tower and the terrain in between.
