The first number represents the rank of the officer. A six is a DPS officer I or II. The next three digits came into being at one time a few years ago when all DPS officers, regardless of rank from all divisions within DPS were placed in alphabetical order based upon last name. The list was generated. So if an officer is promoted to SGT the 6 is changed to a 4 and all other numbers remain. If one makes it to LT, then the 4 becomes a 3. A Captain becomes a 2. A Major will also remain a 2.

The first number of 9 is a non-sworn employee. This numbering system applies across the board at DPS regardless of what division an officer is assigned to. The numbering system and a lot more about DPS is explained in a book that is sold at Amateur Electronics Supply in LV if you want to know more. A lot of locals have it including myself.

At one time their four digit number was on the license plate of their assigned vehicle, I don't know if they still follow that practice.

When I lived in New Mexico more years back than I care to admit, the officer's badge number, license plate, and radio designator were identical. As far as I know all officers took their vehicles home, even in the metro areas. Can you imagine such a system being used by the CHP or many of the eastern states?

Thanks for the info on the NHP, I knew the overall system with 6000 being troopers, 4000 being sergeants, etc., but did not know the other three numbers were assigned to each officer. Since they came up with the original alphabetical list I would imagine that the new officers coming on board would just have sequential numbers assigned.

7xxx and 8xxx series numbers are available for assignment but given the financial problems that the State of Nevada is having very few personnel are hired and the State has a great many empty positions.
This numbering system applies to only the DPS divisions of Highway Patrol, Parole & Probation (yes, they are sworn law enforcement officers who carry weapons and make arrests), Investigations, Capitol Police, and Fire Marshal. If an officer transfers between any of these divisions and maintains their same rank, the radio call number remains the same. If one is promoted, only the first number changes.

Other divisions within DPS include Emergency Management, Emergency Response Commission, Traffic Safety and Information Technology. There are no other divisions within the Nevada DPS.
