Can they track speed in metro cars?

Listening to the scanner right now (SE) cops are in route code to a 406 in progress (burglary) after about 1-2 mins after they were dispatched control tells units to 'arrive alive'. Ive never heard this before so im assuming that maby they track the speed in the cars now? Maby if they go over a certain speed thats the code word to slow down? It would make sense after all that happend last year. Just thought id share it with everyone!

The dispatchers for nypd say the same thing all the time after they send out a call. Not only that, like every hour or so they tell the units somthing like "be sure to wear your safety belts, obey all traffic signals" and so on. A couple years ago I would hear a recorded message come over. It was a widow of an officer that lost his life while responding to a call. She would say the same thing. Drive with care and things like that. I think it's a good idea.

There are no GPS trackers or ways to tell speed from dispatch in Metro's cars. The arrive alive deal is a campaign on-going in the department and just a reminder to drive carefully and safely so that you can actually arrive and assist. If you go 110 mph and wreck, not only can you not assist, but no one else can since they are coming to assist you.

Well its the 17th and have yet too hear it again! How does anyone really know if something wasnt installed after last years tragedy's? The dispatcher said it in a really stern sort of a way! Not to be rude but im just looking for facts not personal opinions.

Don't know about them, but it sure is possible. A lot of vehicles have a stock interface from the ECM that will allow a satellite link and will show a lot of stuff such as speed, braking, engine status, almost anything the ECM in the vehicle can keep track of---and it sends it it real time & stores it too.

The simple answer to this question is yes. There is an automotive equivalent of a "black box" installed in the Crown Vic Police interceptor. It is an open loop data recorder, and just like the dash cam, rewrites over stored data at a given interval.
That's one of the ways they were able to determine the Metro officer who was killed last year after slamming into a pickup truck was doing 110+ (no lights, no siren.)
By the way, I don't know if anything ADDITIONAL was added to the cars after last years mishaps, but the Sherrif announced that UPS was going to interface with Metro to provide "safer driving tips" since UPS has such a huge fleet, and such a miniscule accident record.

Perhaps it means arrive with lights and sirens! Not quite and discrete with no lights!

I know many of the NYC Fleet (Sanitation, DOT, etc) have systems inplace to provide real-time tracking of their vehicles. Specifically, it was designed to track the location of garbage trucks to detail when and where they took their breaks. But they can monitor any data that the driver has, such as speed, direction of travel, location (within feet) oil pressure and fuel consumption.
