The Clark County School District is scrambling to replace $70,000 worth of bus radio equipment. Nearly 200 two-way radios were stolen from buses over the weekend.
Frank Giordano, CCSD vehicle maintenance, said, "It's senseless, unnecessary. It's additional attention we don't need. We should be focusing our attention on other things."
But instead the school district is scrambling to replace 181 two-way radios in time for the start of the 9-month school year. Sometime over the weekend thieves came onto the fenced school bus yard and stole the $70,000 worth of communications equipment.
Giordano said, "It's important. It's important to us it helps the drivers if they break down. If they have problems with directions for new routes, if a child gets sick or hurt on a bus, so it's important."
The radios cost $400 a piece and school district officials believe they may be brought overseas to be sold on the black market.
Frank Giordano continued, "From what I understand anything that's been stolen before has not shown up. I think that leads us to believe that they are probably leaving this country."
The school district had a similar incident occur just a year ago with just as many radios stolen. They were in the process of installing a surveillance system. But no suspects were caught on tape, not even on the bus cameras because the buses were not in operation at the time of the burglary.
The school district says that it took a while for funding to be approved for a new surveillance
