Default Tower Programming Tips

Flying into Sac next week and then driving up to Reno. I'm confused which towers to put in my BCD396T for the Washoe County system? I suspect we will be driving up I-80 thru Truckee, staying several days in Reno for the Airborne Law Enforcement Convention and then returning to Sac via Lake Tahoe. Thanks in advance for any tips on what to include in my scan list.

For that route, put in 106 (6A) North Tahoe (Truckee) (CA) from Nevada Shared Radio System Trunking System, Various, Multi-State - Scanner Frequencies although a unit has to be on that site for it to be active it seems. Then once you get near the State line, use 001 (1) Metro Simulcast from Washoe County Trunking System, Washoe County, Nevada - Scanner Frequencies.

Great, appreciate the quick repsonse. I've also added several additional systems but if you can think of anything I'm missing?:
SAC Reg Trunked
SAC Conv
Placer Co Conv
Placer Co P25
Washoe Co Conv
NVHP Conv
CHP
CA State Fire (Grass Valley, Statewide TACS-Rptrs-Cmds-Air Plans)
Central Nevada Inter
USFS- CA - AirOps, Tahoe NF, Lake Tahoe Basin, Humbolt NF, ElDorado NF
Truckee Meadows items listed above.
Reno Casinos listed in RR

You may also want Nevada and Sierra counties as well as Truckee PD.I also wouldn't worry about the NHP conv as they use the EDACS system.

I have a couple of radio loading charts on the new TMFPD, but they are in XLS. I do not know how to attach them here.
A little late but I converted them to jpgs:

Also, does the NVTACxxx channels correlate to the frequencies on this page: Interoperability Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference
Or are they different?

Thumbs up Thank you group.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for what to program into my 396 before my trip to Sac and Reno last month. I managed to get a fair amount of monitoring in on the trip. I found the 160MHz Placer County P25 system interesting. The Nevada shared EDACs system is like every EDACs system in my area -sucks! On the way back to Sac on I-80 we drove through the smoke from the Robbers fire. Jumped off the highway in Colfax but could never make it into a spot where we could observe any aerial drops. Visited the Sac Metro Fire heli-base in Sac, the CHP base at Auburn and caught a Cal Guard Blackhawk headed out to the fire after refueling at the airport. I've attached a few pics. The Skycrane was positioned at Stead airfield north of Reno. In-fact, it was parked right next to the fenced in area where the P-51 crashed into the grand stands last year. Amazing they have to preserve the site for future litigation. Very sad.
Thanks again,

Mark

Never been a big fan of EDACs systems. We have several in our area and although transmissions might sound fine on a real EDACs radio, through a scanner the transmissions most times sound weak and scratchy. About 10 years ago the City of Dallas attempted to contract with a vendor to put in a citywide EDACs system for the fire department. The contractor, even with the help of the manufacturer, couldn't get it to work correctly. Finally the City canceled the contract and ended up eating about 2 million on the deal. There are only two systems left in this area, Irving and DFW airport. Richardson recently dumped their EDACs system and switched to P25 digital. I've never heard any user in Irving say anything nice about their system, but its like everything else, once you switch you are stuck with it for a long, long time!

Depending on my proximity to the tower, NSRS comes in crystal clear and loud without me having to tweak volume correction on my BCD396XT.

Doesn't everybody use a real EDACS radio to listen to EDACS? :^)

The only time i noticed Simulcast or Multicast is when Volunteers that still use VHF Pagers are included in the initial dispatch and they repeat the toneout on all sites,Slide,Peavine and Virginia Peaks if i remember correctly.

On working fires:

03-067 TM-SLIDE------------------------158.7450/146.2----159.3900/107.2-KXY265
03-070 TM-PEAVINE-------------------158.7450/146.2----159.3900/118.8-KXY265
03-071 TM-VIRGINIA--------------------158.7450/146.2----159.3900/136.5-KXY265
03-072 TM-GERLACH------------------158.7450/146.2----159.3900/127.3-KXY265
03-121--IF-MAIN-INCLINE FIRE------154.2350/CSQ-Simplex---------------KGK541

Are tied with assigned Tlkgrp/VHF Repeater, im not sure if they are tied together 24/7 or not, however the VHF Repeaters always up and dont need to be turned on.
V-Fire/White Fire Channels are Crossbanded also with 800 Mhz im not sure of the Tlkgrps,i have heard them crossbanded at Incline Village/North Tahoe Fire.
That should answer the question.
It doesnt do much good to monitor VHF, but you will hear Pageouts for VFD and until Command/Dispatch assigns TMSlide,TMPeavine,TMVirginia,TMGerlach as the working fire channel its dead.

I use a BR330T & BCT15 for EDACS and i dont really have any problem hearing the EDACS sites.
The sites mostly are on top on the mountains not buildings, those sites near me are around 8 to 10 Thousand Feet
I use the aftermarket 800 mhz Rubber Duck on the BR330T and it works well, if i use it in my vehicle i use a NMO Mag Mount with a 1/4 Wave 800 MHz or sometimes the steel gain antenna with the coiled center, but i havent noticed a real difference except when in fringe area with mtns around me the 1/4 wave seems to work better on 800 MHz & 900 MHz
Approx 3 Inches for 1/4 Wave.

I have a couple of Pro-163 Trunking radios and the RX on 800 MHz gets interference on some of the LCN Freqs, so i use the Unidens for EDACS because the signals and the sound booms in.
Cant explain why the Pro-163 Radios are not as good for 800 MHz around here but it is what it is.
