You can look at Uniden BCT15X which is a great scanner. Shop around and can be had for around $185.

I wouldn't go that far... The radio internals are good, but the user interface and programming are a nightmare... Uniden really dropped the ball with this radio... I'm sure google will reveal lots of complaints. There's a yahoo group for them and its non-stop how do i program this p.o.s.

It's easy to program with Freescan. I have no clue to do it any other way, but using the software is pretty easy.

I agree.. I used to think it was a nightmare to program until I got Freescan. Now I just download the frequencies I want and upload them to the scanner. Easy as can be and is now my favorite scanner (I prefer it over the Home Patrol).

So looks like the info posted prior is correct, LV2 and LV4 for I-15 and US95. I heard troopers making stops reporting on LV4 who were in Nye and Lincoln counties - so this talkgroup covers a HUGE area.

Yes. Anything OUTSIDE the general Las Vegas area is going to be on LV-4 from the south all the way to where Reno picks it up to the north. So US-95, I-15, SR-160, etc... all will be on LV-4.

LV-4 is used on U.S. 95 to the junction of SR 266, the Westguard Pass road. It includes that state route all the way to the state boundary. I heard a group of 3 NHP vehicles traveling together speak with Las Vegas just as they turned onto 95 from 266 last year just as I made the turn on a return trip from Phoenix (Valley of the Sun megalopolis). I think they were on Palmetto or whatever that site is called that does a nice job covering the Fish Lake Valley as well as points east and south of it. T his is consistent with the boundaries shown on the NHP command areas map.

Are any of the LV-1 thru LV-4 used on US 93 on the east side of the state?

I remember hearing LV4 on sites in White Pine and Lincoln County which led me to believe someone was switched to that TG and associated(?) on that site. I've also heard calls out troopers on LV4 asking them to report to non-highway issues in those counties to back up the local sheriff's dept.

Many thanks. I'll add that to my scan list.

According to the 2012 map of the NHP command areas almost all of Lincoln County is in the Southern Command and thus is dispatched by Las Vegas. White Pine County is in the Northern Command East and you would think be dispatched by Elko.
I've heard that the talkgroup of other commands are carried on sites in the adjacent command. As I understand it a radio set to a particular talkgroup will open up a site to communicate on that talkgroup. So, for example, a Las Vegas unit that travels to Tonopah in the Northern Command West to meet with Nye County S.O. personnel would communicate with Las Vegas during that trip. A person listening to a scanner would hear this unit, and all the other traffic on this talkgroup, on the appropriate site as long as that unit's radio is switched to a LV talkgroup. Once that unit leaves the area and is no longer associated with the site the scanner listener can receive, Las Vegas traffic would no longer be heard. This is how Motorola Smartzone systems work, but I'm not sure EDACS systems do this. I suspect so.
However, does this type of communication only exist a certain distance into the adjacent command or is this possible no matter where in Nevada the unit is located? I would think the latter.
I think for many talkgroups such as those that are obviously statewide, such as those used by the state attorney's office, will work on all sites in the state. I don't know if this is true for other talkgroups. For example, if a Las Vegas unit is traveling to Boise, would it be able to call Las Vegas dispatch when it leaves the state at Jackpot? Would it switch to a Northern Command East talkgroup as soon as it entered that command and use Elko all the way up to Jackpot or just stay with one of the Las Vegas talkgroups?
Another possibility is that the unit does not stay in service and advises Las Vegas it will be available by cell phone and if need be uses a local talkgroup. I know that we did this in the Forest Service and before cell phones we never went in service. We still did not have high capacity (+80 channels) radios so once we left the state we worked in our radios only had common tacticals in them and communication with other NF's and BLM districts wasn't likely either. Without cell phones, which occurred in the 80's, we had no means of communication to call in emergencies we might encounter. Before the early 80's we didn't have radios with enough capacity to even communicate with an adjacent National Forest.
We don't hear from people in the small towns of rural Nevada very much and that is a shame. Someone in those locations could really help us to fully understand the NSRS.

In Vegas, I hear Reno 1 quite a bit sometimes. I was of the understanding that this happens if someone has a radio turned to that TG and joined/associated (not sure of term) to a site in the LV Area, or when LV dispatchers take over dispatching Reno calls.
It's possible one of these two was at work when I was driving though that way-LV dispatching for Elko or typically Elko dispatched radio turned to LV-4.

My understanding is the same as your's. I had forgotten that the dispatch centers can take over for others. However, this does not necessarily mean that the individual sites are capable of working any talkgroup. It is possible that when LV takes over Elko, the Elko sites will still only be able to associate with Elko talkgroups. My guess is that this is not the case.
I think a Las Vegas unit was in White Pine County when you heard LV-4 being used there. A White Pine resident or someone that has spend more time in that county would be able to tell us more.

I hear White Pine traffic stops coming up on ELKO 2 on almost every trip as I cross I-80. It may be they split the county north and south. I can fish through my audio files and see exactly where they are located - maybe post a link to a compressed audio track just for fun. (Time compressed, that is)

NHP
When I traveled out to Great Basin National Park last year, I heard all of the NHP traffic out along US93 on the Elko talkgroups, I didn't hear any LV talkgroups. All of the Elko talkgroups were quite active all along the US93 corridor. Listened to Elko groups along I80 back until I picked up Reno talkgroups but never heard any LV talkgroups.
