Default Looking for portable scanner for Derry

I live in Derry and want to be able to listen to PD and FD dispatch. I also drive to Boston every day and would like to hear State Police. What's the best scanner for me?

Thanks in advance.

Pete

You know about your area and how you will use the scanner than anyone else.

Check this site out, it will help you almost immediately: Police Scanners by Uniden Bearcat, AOR and RadioShack

Well, with NH PD's and NHSP being P25 that means you will need a Digital Scanner. Now to add to the confussion, if you want the MASP then you need a Trunked Scanner.

Seems to narrow you down to the most common Digital/Trunked units.
Check out Radio Shack [visit your local store] and take a ride down to HRO in Salem [GRE models] and look at the GRE as well.

Spend some time looking them over [they program different than what you are used to]

Pete:

Radio Shack has the Pro-106 on sale right now (thru 9/5) for $379, which is $120 off full retail. The local Derry RS store shows that it in stock, however the RS web site is showning it as out of stock? You may want to give the Derry store a call.

This scanner would cover all your NH & MA needs. As noted, the GRE version (PSR-500) would as well, but that one is not on sale right now.

The GRE PSR-500 is the same as the Pro-106 except for the case design,

With that said, if you want to do proper scanning with digital, analog, trunked systems, etc, get you a Pro-106, which I think is well worth it at the sale price. I just picked one up my self this week. Great scanner and I learned how to program it, largely without the manual or the quick start guide (that got me started), very quickly.

While you are at radio shack, go ahead and pick up the USB programming cable. Online, you typically will be paying more (either from scannermaster or greamerica's site) for the cable, particularly when shipping cost is added in.

My GRE 600 had the Cable included. Maybe that accounts for the price differences

What's in the box:
-PRO-106 handheld scanner (check)
-Flex antenna (that antenna is hardly flexible)
-Rechargeable battery shell (yellow, check)
-Battery Shell (black, check)
-Owner's manual (check, along with various other useless pieces of paper)

No USB progamming cable
No cloning cable
No AC adaptor
No DC or car adaptor

Other than that, GREAT scanner

Same lineup goes for Scanner Master (and they still sell it for $499, note so much as a flinch of competitiveness).

The main idea, know what you want, price it, buy it, get what you pay for, be happy.

Thanks everyone. I'll have to head over to The Shack after work.
