pl - private line. i believe motorola invented it. there are 51 possible code's. it goes by various other name's depending on the radio mfg. code example - 151.4 or motorola 5z.

dpl - digital private line. 104 code's. example - dpl 503.

Default Dpl/pl

DPL (Digital private line) is the same as DCS (Digital coded squelch)
CTCSS (Continuous tone coded squelch system) is the official designation for what Motorola called it's trademark PL (Private line) Check the RR WIKI for additional information & a list of both types of encoding systems.
