Your receiver has this "window" that's called a passband. It's wider in FM versus NFM. Think about having a large bay window (FM) and a smaller window about 1/2 the size (NFM). You can see a big truck and read the letters off the side with one, but can only see three or four letters through the smaller window. The passband is a function of how wide the filtering is in the receiver. So, if a signal is too wide, it will pop out of the passband (you won't be able to see all of the truck's letters). That's been the big deal with public safety systems and change-over dates. Mixing wide and narrow, the wide will pop out of the narrow receiver's passband, sounding very distorted and broken, and narrow will sound noticeably less louder through a wide receiver. YMMV.
