Default talk groups

How do I get "talk group" information from the internet to my scanner?? I have found what I want (I think) but they are some sort of four diget codes and I don't know what to do with them.

Exactly how will depend on what type of trunked system you are trying to program and which brand/model scanner you are using. But basically it boils down to setting up the system by indicating which type of system it is, programming the control channels, and THEN entering the talkgroup IDs. Here is a link that will hopefully have your particular scanner’s manual in an easier to read form.

Mark's Scanners

There are forums for the different brands of scanners (Uniden, Radio Shack, GRE) where you might want to ask specific programming questions. A lot of people use software to help save time in programming, and with a premium membership here at Radio Reference, you can very easily import systems and be up and running in no time. I haven't yet learned how to do this, but others can help you get started. Good luck and hope this helps.

As kayi4cle says, it is a relatively simple task to program your scanner once you have the Premium Subscription, which I see you do have. Now all we need is to know the type of scanner and which systems you would like to listen to and we can help you along.

Don't know how much you know about trunking, but this article may be of some interest to you.

Again I must ask, (1) What MODEL (number) of scanner you have and (2) which system are you trying to monitor (Name of system; City and State where it is located).

You might also want to post this question in the Pennsylvania Discussion Forum since you give your location as being in Pennsylvania. The local folks would be in a much better position to answer this question once they know the type (Model Number) of scanner you are using and which city fire department.

I don't know the specifics of programming that particular scanner, but note that there are a number of programs available that will allow you to program it more easily than you could manually. They are listed here

PSR-300/400 Software and USB Support - The RadioReference Wiki

If you don't have the cable for connecting your scanner to your computer, you'll have to get that, of course. I think that most of the programs have trial periods and I'd suggest that you download them and see which one seems most user friendly. You can then use that program together with your premium subscription to download the system information from RR and upload it to your scanner.

Ultimately, it would be a good idea to learn to program the scanner manually so that you can make changes when you don't have access to your computer. While not everyone is likely to agree, I think programming with software and then learning to do it manually is the best bet. I know some people feel that one should learn to do it manually first.
