Default Grundig availibilty

Ive come to the following conclusion....

theres no such thing as a new radio for $300 to $500 thats a portatop that isnt total garbage.

That said, Im going for the lower risk "garbage" at $300 with the Grundig 750. I live in Connecticut however and I want to purchase it in a store. I want to try it out first in the store is another way orf saying it.

That said,

Anyone know a directory online that will tell me who has it in stock? Or doi I have to call up every single radioshack and circuit city in the state of connecticut.

Its sad really. I'm not going used I considered it. Im just going less expensive new. The ICOMs are too too pricey, though alas, they are great [finally]. Too, I need a radio type of portability.

The Grundig 750... the criteria is this...

Im bringing my g6 along with me. If its cant beat it, I wont buy the 750.

I will say this radio has been maligned as much as its been even handed./ Horn makes a nice review. Others are glaringly comical.

Anyway, thanks in advance.

Pete

Save your fingers dialing.
RS doesn't carry them and Circuit City is out of business.

You're seriously going to judge a SW radio in some type of store with fluorescent lighting?
Good luck with that.

How portable does it need to be?
Sony 7600GR portable or Grundig Satellit 800 portable?

you've ruled out the Icom R series? Scannermaster isn't too far from you, and has a retail store and sells those.

You've read the widely mixed reviews of the 750 as more of an expensive toy than a real radio?
How about the Kaito's that are said to perform exceptionally well?

The radio is no better than the antenna system and the radio's ability to utilize an antenna...old theory of first get a great antenna, then get it up really high, then get a better radio. (just stating the obvious).
Just ideas,
Eric

I don't know if it can all be called garbage. There's some really nice little portables Grundig makes. Typically you're really going to have to bump up in price before you hear a big difference. But how about a used Drake SW8. There's some out there. Or how about a used 2010? There's ones out there with custom filters and everything.

What you can do is order from RS online and ship it to a store. Then spend some time with it... You don't like it, bring it back.
