New to this too, but getting there. You definitely have to have your scanner turned on for it to communicate. I have the same mouse and that has nothing to do with your problem. Mine is communicating fine, however it takes a little playing with to get the port. I use free scan and it has an auto locate for a port. If that does not work you go to your device manager. Just click on control panel, then double click on SYSTEM. I have Windows Vista, so after i click on system I see DEVICE MANAGER on my top left of the screen. Click on DEVICE MAN,Go down to where it says PORTS ( COM & LP) double click the com & lp and it should show you an open port or the one for your cable. Mine shows COM 3. If you only have 2 USB ports, you may want to invest in a HUB, to give you more open USB ports.Like I said, I downloaded FREESCAN and what took me hours to enter manually, only took seconds. Hope this helps. Other will jump in to help you, its a great site.
