To the OP: I would suggest if you are really interested in ham radio, find a local ham club and start going to some meetings and meeting with people who can mentor you in this hobby. When I started in the hobby a couple of years ago, I knew NOTHING about ham radio but wanted to learn. I went to the ARRL website and they list local affiliate ham clubs with contact emails. I contacted the guy about the club and that I was interested in being a ham radio operator and testing. They emailed me back, gave me dates and locations for testing and invited me to the club. I started going met some people and eventually took my Technician exam and passed it. I am still with the club and am working on my General Class license with some help from members. It's a great hobby, I encourage you to get with some hams and learn as much as you can, I'm sure where you are there are probably multiple clubs around. I still listen to scanners but as a adjunct to my ham hobby. There are many things to learn and get involved in, don't be a loner, there's lots to do with others out there!
